Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THERON O. STEARNS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PROCESS OF MANUFACTURING TOILET SOAP;
SIEGIFIGATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 508,777, dated November 14, 1893.
Application filed January 17, 1893- Serial No. 458,702. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THERON O. STEARNS, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Process of Manufacturing Toilet -Soap, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in the process of manufacturing toilet soaps, and it has for its object to so improve the process under which toilet soaps are manufactured, as to produce a perfectly neutral soap, that is, a soap free from any excess of alkali or unchanged oil, and the invention consists in the novel steps of the process, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.
Heretofore in the manufacture of toilet soaps it has been found impossible to provide against an excess of alkali and the presence of unchanged oil. These two factors in many instances prove deleterious to sensitive skin, so much so as to cause the skin to chap readily and to produce a roughness upon the skin which should not exist after the use of a proper toilet soap.
It is the prime object of this invention to so manufacture a toilet soap that it, as has heretofore been stated, will be perfectly neutral and may be used with as perfect safety and with as good results upon the skin of an infant as upon the skin of an elderly person, in both instances acting as a tonic for the skin, and further as a soothing agent.
A soap such as has been above described is produced in the following manner: After the ordinary process has been completed as far as possible, or as far as it is usually carried, any known means being employed, almond meal is added to the soap prior to its being formed into marketable shape, the almond me'al being added in sufficient quantities to entirely neutralize the excess of alkali and unchanged oil. Almond meal is an absorbent of alkali and oil, and its chemical action is such that upon absorption it effectually neutralizes the entire soap mass, and the result is a toilet soap which may be used upon the most delicate skin without any evil effects attending it's use, but on the contrary the skin will be greatly benefited thereby.
' Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new, and desire to secure byvLetters Patent v 1. The herein described process in the manufacture of soap, which consists in adding to the soap stock a sufficient quantity of almond meal to neutralize the excess of alkali and unchanged oil that may be present in the mass, substantially asand for the purpose specified.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, the combination, with soap stock, of almond meal in quantities adapted to neutralize an excess of alkali or unchanged oil, as and for the purpose specified.
THERON C. STEARNS.
