SPIRIT LEVEL.
No. 508,762. Patented NOV. 14, 1893.
NITED STATES;
HERMANN OTTO RI ssE,
OF LEIPSIO, GERMANY.
SPIRIT-LEVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 508,762, dated November 14, 1893.
Application filed May 10, 1893.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN OTTO RIssE, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Leipsic, in the Kingdom of Saxony, German Empire, have invented; certain new and useful Improvements in Spirit-Levels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a new and improved spirit level which may be used the same as ordinary spirit levels; and also forindicatingthe inclination of other than plane surfaces, such for example as shafts or cylinders.
To accomplish this object my invention consists in the features of constructionand the combination or arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan view ofa spirit level constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the end sections adjusted out of coincidence with the body of the spirit level. i
In order to enable. those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, Iwill now de-' scribe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein the letters a, and b indi? cate two spirit tubes'fixed'at right angles to' each other in the body of the instrument, which latter is constructed of malleable iron, or some other material capable of resisting shocks or strains. The main tube a is preferably placed within the body of the instrument, so that it .is visible through openings at the top and each side of a cover plate 0, and the secondary tube bis visible from both sides of the instrument. The openings to both tubes may be covered by disks, plates, or pieces of glass to shield and protect the tubes.
The sides and the top and bottom of the body of the instrument are rectilinear and parallel to the main tube a; and the end sections d, d on the body of the instrument are parallel to the secondary'tube b. The end sections at, d aregrooved at their three outer or exposed sides, as indicated at f, f, and these end sections are susceptible of move- Serial No. 473,681. (No model.)
instrument.
In Fig. 1 the end sections d, d are shown in their normal positions, while in Fig. 3 they are shown adjusted laterally out of coincidence with the body of the instrument. The lateral adjustment of the end sections is accomplished through the medium of rotatable screws 9 g, journaled to rotate in the end portions of the body of the instrument and engaging screw nutse c which are rigidly fixed in any suitable manner to the laterally adjustable end sections d 61 It is very desirable that both end sections be adjusted to the same degree, for the purpose of obtaining parallelism of the main tube a, and the cylindrical or other surface being tested; and to accomplish this object I provide spring-controlled pins k and k, which are mounted on the body of the instrument, and are provided with finger pieces 1" r, by which they may be ment upon the extremities of the body of the drawn outward to disengage the inner ends of the pins from recesses or holes in the inner sides h h of the end sections 01', (P. Then the end sections are adjusted laterally through the medium of the screws 9 g, the springpressed pins will spring into the recesses or holes in the inner sides h h of the end sections, so that the latter can be adjusted to the same extent. The grooved construc-' 'tion of adjustable end' pieces enables these parts to rest firmly upon any shaped surface, as for instance a shaft or cylinder. Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A spiritlevel having laterally adjustable end sections, one or more, substantially as de scribed.
2. A spiritlevel having laterally adjustable end sections provided with tially as described.
3. The combination with the body of a spirit level, of laterally adjustable end sections carrying screw nuts, and screws mounted on the body of the instrument and engaging the screw nuts for adjusting theend sections laterally, substantially as described.
7 4. The combination with the body of a spirit level, of laterally adjustable end sections, means for adjusting the end sections, and
grooves, substanspring-pressed pins adapted to snap into encarried by the body of the instrument and I0 gagement with the adjustable end sectionsfi adapted to snap into engagement with the substantially as described. end sections, substantially as described.
5. The combination withthe body of a spirit l In witness whereof I have hereunto set my level, of laterally adjustable end sections pro- 9 hand in presence of two witnesses. vided with grooves and carrying screw nuts, 5 IIERMANN OTTO RISSE. screws mounted on the body of the instrul Witnesses: ment and engaging the screw nuts for adjust- CARL HARING,
ing the end sections, and spring-pressed pins CARL BORNGRAEBER.
