Description
(No Model.) A. F. HUSTON.
BOILER BRAGE.
No. 508,718. Patented Nov. 14,1893.
FIG/.6.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAM F. HUSTON, oF COATESVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOILER- BRAQE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,718, dated November 14, 1893.
Application filed May 22, 1893.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABRAM F. HUSTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Coatesville, Chester county, Pennsylvania, haveinvented certainlmprove men ts in Boiler- Braces, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to so construct a brace for staying the heads of steam boilers and like structures as to render the same extremely strong at the points where strength is most required, and to permit of the manufacture of the brace from pieces of flatiron or steel without welds. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which' Figure l, is a sectional view of part of the shell of a steam boiler or like vessel, illustrating the application of my improved brace thereto. Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the brace. Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the lower end of the same. Fig. 4, is an enlarged transverse section through the web or shank of the brace. Fig. 5, is a similar view illustratiug a special construction of this part of the brace; and Fig. 6, is a view of the blank from which the brace is formed.
In Fig. l A represents part of the cylindrical shell of the boiler, and B part of the head of the same, which must be braced by connection with said shell. The improved brace which I have devised for this purpose comprises a hollow or U-shaped web or shank a having at one end a plate I) for being'secured to the cylindrical shell of the boiler, and at the opposite end, a plate 61 for being secured to the head B, the hollow shank a merging into the end plate I) but being continued in reduced size to the end of the plate (I so as to form on said plate I a central stiffening or strengthening rib f, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, by which means the strain is exerted upon the area of the plate or head at in such manner as to be distributed throughout said head, thereby lessening the strain'upon the secur- Serial No. 475,123. (No model) ing rivets and preventing the stripping of the heads of the same or the loosening of the A brace, in short, the central rib f renders the head d rigid and unyielding against the strains to which it is subjected.
My improved brace can be readily manufactured from a strip of iron or steel of the shape shown in Fig. 6, this blank being readily bent so as to form the folded or U-shaped shank or web with the end plates or heads at an angle to each other by means of simple bending or forging apparatus, the blanks themselves being readily cut from the pieces which constitute scrap in an ordinary plate rolling mill, or they may be cut from plates if desired.
In some cases I prefer to form the central hollow web or shank of the brace with flanges t' at the open edge of the same, as shown in Fig. 5, so that the web of thebrace will practically form a pair of angle bars having their Webs united at the bottom.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The within described brace for boiler heads 850., the same consisting of a strip or plate ofmetal bent or folded to form opposite heads at an angle'to each other, and a connecting web or shank extending along one of the heads to form a strengthening rib thereon, substantially as specified.
2. The within described brace for boiler heads &c., the same consisting of a strip or plate of metal bent or folded so as to form endplates or heads at an angle to each other, and a connecting web 'or shank of U-shape with laterally projecting flanges at the open edge, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ABBA F. HUSTON.
