Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROSWELL S. JUDSON, OF MATTEAWAN, NEW YORK.
SASH-WEIGHT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersrBatent No. 508,546, dated November 14, 1893. Application filed February 18, 189.3. Serial No- 462,819. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RosWELL S. JUDsoN, a citizen of theUnited States, and a resident of Matteawamin the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Weights; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the iuvention, which will enablel others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom-- a cheap yet strong and durable sash weight of true cylindrical shape.
To this end my improvement consists in the peculiar construction', as an improved article of manufacture, ofthe wrought-iron sashweight which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A denotes the core of the Weight, which is simply a section of uarter inch wrought iron pipe. This`is force into another section of larger pipe B, while the latter is hot, so that, when this outer pipe, B, cools off and shrinks, it will bind the inside core A, so as to form practically one piece. The next operation is to insert the part A B into another section of pipe O, of still larger diameter, which is first heated so as to cause it to expand sufficiently to receive this core A B; and in this manner the weight is built up successively by concentric sections or layers of pipe until it is of the size and heaviness desired in any given ease. The last operation is to flatten the projecting end, E, of the inside pipe, or core, A, and drill a hole, F, through itfor the attachmentof the sash cord, when the weight is nished by filingolf and beveling itat both ends, as shown at G.
On the drawings, I have shown a Weight composed or built up of four concentric sections of pipe, marked respectively A, B, C and D; Vbut it will be obvious that a larger or smaller number of pi pe-sections may be used, according to how heavy a weight ot' a given length is to be.
It will be seen that this Weight isexceedingly simple in construction and can be made by any blacksmith, as light or heavy as may be desired.
Having vthus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an improved articleof manufacture, a metallic sash weight built up of a suitable number of concentric sections or layers of pipe shrunk upon one another while hot; the innermost section or core being extended beyond its enveloping sections and having its extended end flattened and perforated for the attachment of the sash cord, substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto ai'ixed my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
ROSWFLL S. JUDSON.
