To all whom it may concern;
Be it known thatI, JAMES N. SKINNER, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Face-Plate Jaws, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,wherebyany one skilled in the art can make and use the same.
The objectof my invention is toprovide a work holding jaw such as is used in chucks which shall be particularly adapted for use on a face plate, the jaw having certain features of improvement that particularly adapt it for use in any desired place on the face plate to which it may besecured as by means of clamp bolts.
To this end my invention consists in the details of the several parts making up the face plate jaw as a whole,and in the combination of such parts, as more particularly hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a detail view in lengthwise section through the device shown in position on a face plate. Fig.2 is a detail view in rear elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is a detail view incross section through the bed plate.
In the accompanying drawings the lettera denotes a face plate or like part which is of ordinary construction with a groove 1) therein adapted for use in connection with means for securinga bed plate therein. This bed plate (1 is prefcrably-for1ned with a tongue d extending into the groove in the face plate so as to hold the bed plate in proper alignment. The bed plate is removably secured to the face plate by means of the clamp bolts e f, the former extending through a hole in a lug in the bed plate and having a nut on its up per end, the head of this bolt, in the form shown, extending beyond and engaging the edges of the groove on opposite sides. The bolt f is located in a socket in or near the opposite end of the bed plate and has a conical or tapered socket f into which a cam g borne on the cam bolt 9 extends. The latter is screw threaded in a socket in the side of the bed plate and extends inward with its inner end passing through the socket in the bolt f .vice which consists of a groove k cut lengthand resting in a socket in the bed plate on Serial No. 480,687. (No model.)

The object of this arrangement of these clamping parts the bolt fand the cam bolt g, is to enable the bed plate to be secured to the face plate or loosened therefrom by means readily accessible without requiring access to the lower side of the face plate or the inner end of the bed plate'above the face plate. A further ad- 50 vantage of this particular construction of the parts is that it enables the nut h to be properly adjusted to the desired thickness of the face plate or of the flange at the side of the groove in which the tongue d of the bed plate is located and after once adjusting the bolt to the proper length the lower or threaded portion of the bolt f may be out off to proper length for use. [This bed plate supports an adjustable jaw i made in two sections, the lower one of which 4." is provided with a nutj extending into a recess in the bed plate and having grooves made on opposite sides into which flanges on the bed plate project and thus hold the jaw from any- 5 thing except a sliding movementin its socket in the bed plate. The upper section 2' of the jaw is secured to the lower section by means of screws passing therethrough so that its upper section can be reversed by unfastening So the screws and turning the jaw end for end, and this without requiringthe lower section to be disturbed in its place. i
A feed screw 70 having a rounded shoulder It extends within the recess in the bed plate 8 and through the threaded nut, the rounded shoulder resting in a socket in the abutment at one end of the bed plate, while the other end of the screw rests and thrusts against a removable cover plate which is secured by any convenient means to the opposite end of the bed plate. The squared end of the feed screw extends in the usual manner in a position easy of access forawrenchora key which may be used to turn the screw and move the 5 jaw lengthwise along the bed plate. The feed screw it is provided with a self clearing de-/ wise along the shaft and across the threads, this clearing groove extending along that part I00 of the threaded portion of the shaft which is traversed by the nut. In the use of feed screws for this and similar purposes more or less difficulty has been experienced owing to the clogging up of the screw which causes it to bind in the nut, but by means of the clearing groove just described I have found by experiment that the interengaging threads are cleaned of all dirt and deposit and run freely for long periods of time without requiring any attention. It is obvious that this selfcleaning feature of the invention is applicable to other devices in which afeed screw and traveling nut are used, as well as to the specific form of machine which is described here-.

The advantages accruing from the use of this form of the bolt f and the cambolt g are readily apparent as it is obvious that when a number of the bed plates are in position on the face plate with the jaws holding apiece of work, and it is desired to change the position of one of the bed plates for any purpose, it will be practically impossible to get access to the under side of the face place or the inner end of the bed plate on top of the former for the purpose of securing the latter in position, and it is in connection with such an arrangement of the dilferent parts of the device that my improvement finds one of its greatest advantages.
As before described the upper jaw i is secured to the lower jaw c" by means of screws passing through the former and taking into a screw threaded socket in the latter. In the adjacent faces of each of these jaw sections and surrounding the screw sockets are provided sockets for a hub, the fastening screws passing through this hub that provides an additional means whereby any movement of one of the jaws upon the' other is effectually prevented.
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination with a face plate, a bed plate adj ustably secured thereto, an adjustable bolt located in the one part and having a conical opening transversely through it, a cam screw located in the opposite part having a cam extending within the socketin the bolt, an adjustable jaw mounted on the bed plate, and a feed screw engaging the adj ustable jaw andprovided with a lengthwise cleaning groove, all substantially as described.
2. In combination with a bed plate, an adjustable jaw mounted on the bed plate, means for moving the jaw lengthwise along the bed plate, a clamp device comprising a bolt having a conical opening extending transversely through it, a socket located in the bed plate, and a cam screw with a cam extending through the bolt and into the socket in the bed plate, all substantially as described.
3. In combination with a face plate, a bed plate adjustably secured thereto, an adjustable bol-t located in the one part and having a conical opening transversely through it, a cam screw located in the opposite part having a cam extending withinthe socket in the bolt and with its inner end projecting into a socket in the bed plate, the socketin the-bed plate, and an adjustable jaw mounted on the bed plate, all substantially as described.
4. In combination with a face plate, a bed plate adjustabl-ysecured thereto, an adj ustable bolt located in the one part and having a conical opening transversely through it, a cam screw located in the opposite part having a cam extending within the socket in the bolt and with its inner end extending into a socket in the bed plate, the socket in the bed plate, an adjustable jaw mounted on the bed plate, and a feed screw engaging the ad j ustable jaw and provided with a lengthwise cleaning groove, allsubstantially as described.
