To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEoDoR WENSEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. rIaul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Printers Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention. relates to locking devices commonly calledc printers hooks or clamps for stereotype and other plates.
My principal object is to provide a simple and efficient printers hook; and the invention consists, further, in the construction and combination of the clamp-jaw, block, and screw illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of my hook from above. VFig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a front view. Fig. 4 is a cent-ral longitudinal section. Fig. 5 is a front view of the head of the screw. Fig. is a longitudinal plan of the screw. Fig. 7 is a plan ofthe clamp-jaw, and Fig. 8 is aside view of the clamp-jaw.
My device comprises, essentially, three parts: first, a clamp-j aw l, provided with the hook 2 second, a block 3, formed with a centrally-threaded cavity 4 of uniform diameter and pitch, which passes through the entire length of the block, said block also having lslots 5, parallel with said cavity 4, located substantially midway between the top and bottom of the block, and third, a screw botlr ends 6 and 7 of which are uniform in diameter and pitch, said diameter and pitch corresponding' with those of the central cavity 4 inthe block. The ends 6 and 7 of the screw are connected by a shaft 8 of relatively v small diameter. l
The shaft of the screw is adapted to pass through and have its bearing in a yoke-opening 9 in the clamping-jaw, the latter being formed with side iianges 10 and 11. The fiange 10 is adapted to slide in the slots 5 of the block, while the fiange 11, carrying the hook 2, moves upon the upper bearing-surfaces l2, which are formed on the top of the block. The screw is threaded into the central cavity bf the block. and its construction as described is such that its end 6 will follow through the entire length of the central cavity of the block, and as this movement carries with it the clamping-jaw wide adjustabilityfof the hook upon the plates is possible. The coaction between the slotted block and flanged clamping-j aw also secures accuracy of movement and rigidity of the hook when clamped upon a plate. The head of the screw is crossed by a plurality of slots 13, while portions of the upper surfaces l14 and 15 of the block immediately adjacent to` the screw are beveled to permit the manipulation of the screw from above when its head has receded so. that it is not readily accessible from in front-that is to say, lthis slotting of the screw and beveling of the upper surface of the blocks enables the operator in locking or unlocking a plate to turn the screw from in front or above, as is most convenient.
The operation of my device is obvious. As is usual aV series of the clamps are used for fastening and adjusting a plate in a chase, the edges of the plate being locked between the. hooks 2 of the clamp-jaws. The screw is actuated by inserting a tool in the slotted head, andas the screw is turned it carries with it the clamp-j aw, which is yoked upon the shaft 'of the s crew by means of the opening 9 in the clamp-1 aw. .Thus by the manipulation' of the screw-head the plate may be gripped or released at the will of the operator.,
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, isf- .1. A printers hook, comprising a block, 'clamping-j aw and screw, ,said block containlng slots extending from the central cavity to the outer surfaces of the block and se: Ll jaw being' provided with lateral flanges respectively adapted to slide in and above said slots.

A printers hook comprising a block, clamping-j aw and screw, said blodli containing two longitudinalA slots extending transversely to its outer surfaces and substantially T95' midway between its upper and lower surfaces and a central, threaded cavi-ty of uniform diameter adapted to receive the screw while said ,law 1s provided with lateral ianges respectively adapted to slide in and above said roc slots.
3. A printers hook comprising a block, clamping-jaw-and screw, said block containing two longitudinal slots and a central,
threadedcavity of uniform diameter, parallel 105 with said slots, said jaw, being` provided with lateral flanges adapted to slide in said slots and. a yoke for said screw, formed to fit over the central portion thereof, while both ends of the screw are threaded in the central cavx lo ity of the block.
