Be it known that l, THOMAS C. HAMBLY, of the city and the county of San Francisco, and

State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Seatsfor Drivers and Conductors of Street and other Cars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- .4

Figure Il shows an apparatus made according to my invention, the seat being seen ready for use. Fig. 2 represents the apparatus when the seat has been secured along the front or dash-board of a car.

The object of this invention is to provide a movable seat for conductors and drivers of street `and other cars.

It consists in applying a seatupon the end or upper bar ot' a crane or swinging frame and hinging the crane to the inner side or face of the dash-board of a ear. Then the seat is to` be used the crane is swung out from the dashboard, and when it is not to be used it can be swung against the dash-board and secured thereto by a spring-catch. 'lhe seat itself is weighted on one side, so as to take always a vertical position on the top of the crane.

B, which may be iliade capable of swinging out from the dash-board to any desired extent or angle from a quarter of a circle or less to the extent ot' halt' a circle. A spring-catch,1), is atiixed tothe dash-board B, which catch engages the straight arm of the crane and holds it fast against the dash-board when pushed in that direction'.

C designates a seat, which is hinged upon the straight arm of the crane and is loaded on one side, so that as soon as the driver or conductor rises from oi' it the seat automatically takcs the vertical position shown in Fig. 2. Such a scat may be provided ,on each end ot' a car, when one can be used by the driver and the other by the conductor, and both of these persons will be Vthereby relieved oflnuch ot' the fatigue which now awaits them from being compelled to stand during their trips. Since the service of these classes of laborers extends through about fourteen hours of every day, it willbc understood that this invention will be to them a Welcome'benefaction.

The crane may be hinged to the body or end of a car, and it may be so made by hanging its post out ofa vertical line or by applying a spring as to swing against its latch automa-tically as soon as it is released by the .person using it.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A swinging seat for street or other cars applied to the dash-board or other place on a car, constructed substantially as shown and described.
