SPECIFICATION forming part of `Letters Patent No. 508,081, dated November 7, 1893.

To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES F. BoGAN, of Westport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chin-Rests for the Dead; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to chin rests for the dead and its novelty consists in its construction. It is more specifically an improvement upon the device described and claimed in Letters Patent of4 theV United States No. 384,513, dated June 12, 1888, and issued to Carl B. Dolge, its construction being simpler and more economical.

In the device referred to a chin plate and head plate were provided in addition to the frame which supported them. I have found that I can dispense with these and I have made a chin rest of a single piece of wire, which is unobtrusive, needs no such plates and can be made very cheaply.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of my device with the chin piece tilted forward. Fig. 2 is a similar view with it tilted backward and Fig. 3 illustrates the device as applied to a corpse.

The device is made of a single piece of Wire bent into shape as required and composed of an inverted U-shaped section A which is the chin piece and on each side of which is symmetrically disposed the two sections B and B and D and D turned back and forming the loops C and C and terminating in a flatend as d and 0l.

The method of using my device is obvious from the illustration in Fig. 3. The rounded edges of the chin piece A are placed directly under the chin and support it, and the two side members, a, and a are on each side of the Adarns apple. The loops C and C are so placed that they are almost,it` not entirely, concealed by the collar and the sections D and D converge and -embrace the back of the headv and by their inherent elasticity hold the whole in position. v

My deviceV is simple, almost out of sight and can be made so cheaply that it may be buried with the cadaver.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new is- A chin rest made of a continuous piece of wire formed into a chin piece A, the loops C and C and converging arms D and D', substantially as described.
