FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,027, dated November 7, 1893.

To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that We, JAMES R. LATHAM, residing in the city, county, and State ot New York, and FRANK E. WILLIAMS, residing at. Alhambra, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, citizens of the United States,have invented a new and useful Fastenarrangement, and combination of the parts in *relative detail and as a whole, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed, together with all equivalents l or analogous structures that may hereinafter appear.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe, showing a fasteningv applied thereto contemplating the invention and broken away to illustrate the position and op-` eration of a buttoningdevice in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is adetail perspective view of the parts of the fastening detached and shown on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a transverse central section of the two members of the fastening shown in engagement with each other. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the male member of the fastening embodying the invention and shown formed with a spring action. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the male member of the fastening shown ot' Solid form and embodying the invention. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the male member of the fastening, showing the same arranged to be 'sewed or secured by stitches to its support.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referringto the drawings, thernumeral 1 designates the female member of the fastening, which is shown by Fig. 3 in one form, and consists of a tubular core 2, with a flanged head 3, and a lower inwardly-bent circumferential shoulder 4, interiorly arranged. The lower end of the core 2 projects below the said shoulder and is arranged to be turned up against a washer or plate 5 and fit in a slight indentation 6 to shield the end of the same. The upper part of the core 2 is surrounded by a covering of vulcanized rubber, paper-pulp, papier mache, or other composition of matter, as at 7, to form a head and a lower bearing flange that rests upon the outer surface of the material to which said female member is applied. This is one form of the female member, but it will be understood that other forms may be equally well used and the invention is not in the least limited by the foregoing description.
As shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3, a male member 8 is shown that consists of a base or door plate 9, having securing prongs or legs 10, that are passed through the material of the article on which the fastening is employed,
and the rearmost side of the said base or floor plate -is formed with an entrant curved recess 11, having the inner wall, at the center, deflected downwardly, as at 12, to form a coucave guide. The said base or floor plate is also formed witha series of slots or openings 13, that VextendV therethrough and through which are passed `the prongs or legs 14 of a liange 15, of a stud or post 16, forming the male member of the fastening. The said prongs or legs of the ange are bent under the base or floor plate to Ythereby firmly secure the two parts together, and the stud or post 16, at the rear thereof and over the guide formed by the deliection 12 of the base or iioor plate, is provided with an opening 17, that extends inwardly thereinto from one side thereof, as shown, by removing a part of the flange 15 at said point. It will -be seen that the deiiection l2, together with the opening 17, forms a socket in the male member for a purpose that will be fully hereinafter set forth. In Figl the saidmale member of the fastening is shown provided with a springhead 18, and the socket islocated in the baseiiangc of the same and at the rear in a man- :oo
ner similar to the form heretofore set forth. In Fig. 5 themale member of the fastening is shown of solid form, and the socket is located therein slightly above' the base of the same, thereby illustrating that if desired, the said socket may be positioned at any point so long as a convenient engagementthereof maybe obtained.
As shown in Fig. 1, the fastening herein set forth in its various forms is arranged for use in connection 'with a buttoner that will now be set forth for the purpose, solely, of describing the function of the socket in the male member of the fastener. The saidbuttoner comprises a shank 19, having a suitable handle at the upper end of the same, and. a lower .heel 20, and an engaging toe or finger 21and anarch 22 intermediate ofsaidheeli andltoe or finger.
