Description

HENRY B. ADAMS, OF BROOKIJYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SIDING VAND COVERING BUILDINGS WITH WOOD.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,784, dated November 7, 1865.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY B. ADAMS, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Article for Covering the Roofs and Sides of Houses; and I do hereby declare and ascertain my said invention, refering to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l shows a strip detached; Figf), strips in place upon the building.
My invention has for its purpose the economizin g and cheapening materials for covering buildings asa substitute for ordinary shingles, clapboards, &c.; and itconsists in cutting from around the surface ofa log strips of wood somewhat in the manner veneers and other articles have been heretofore cut; but instead of cutting, as has before been done, parallel surfaces, I cut the material beveling or thicker at one edge than the other, so as to make the proper taper from edge to edge of the article, as clearly represented in the Figs. I and 2. For this purpose, I out from the log at two opposite points at the same time, the knives being so set as to cut the bevel head and point alternately from around thelog. By this means I get long strips of wood with the grain ruiming up and down like shingles without the breaking I of joints that render shingled roofs so apt to I become leaky by the numerous joints required therein. l am enabled, also, to greatly economize the material used in which there is no waste, and I make a much handsomer job with fewer nails and less labor than with any other material ever before essayed. The chamfer at the butt of the strip is given to it before it is cut from the log by a proper knife set for the purpose. I propose coating these strips, before laying them, on both sides with paint or or other water-proof material.
Having thus fully described my improved covering-strips for buildings, what I claim therein, and for which I desire to obtain Letters Patent, is-
A new article of manufacture formed like clapboards, but with the grain ofthe wood running up and down, the same being made in long strips by cutting them from around the log, as herein described, by which I avoid the manyjoints of a covering of shingles and produce a more perfect coverin g for buildings, and more economical than has been heretofore known.
HENRY B. ADAMS.
In presence of- S'rEPHEN G. CLARKE, Mosns M. ROBINSON.
