Description

`1ti Vfaire @anni @Hire LEAANDER RODNEY, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters .Patent No. 74,430, datedviFebruary 11, 1868; antedated-January 31, 1868.
` IMPROVED CEMENT-ROOEING.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, LEANDER RODNEY,`of New York city, county, and State, have invented a new and improved Method of Covering or Roofing Houses and other objects, and rendering the same water-proof, and
of increased strength and durability; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description" thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts of the several figures. l The nature of my invention consists in covering the rafters or sheathing-boards, or other articles on which the roof is designed to rest, with strips of wood, or other suitable material, of any desired thickness, placed edgeways, (Figure 1,) 1 to 21, which strips are securely fastened together, by nails or otherwise, with irregular top edges, forming keys, 20 and 21; or grooved, 13 to 19 and 1 to'4; or irregular edges, 5 to 12, in which the cement rests, and hardens or sets. These are firmly fastened to the rafters, &c., and the coating of cement, A, or other suitable material, is applied thereon, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified. In addition to this coating of cement, covering the above-described strips, lay down sections or plates or sheets, 2f? and 26, made of two or more sheetspor breadths or-thicknesses, a, b, and c, of paper, felting, burlaps, or other material, with cement, or other suitable material, between the sheets. Each sheet to be of the same size, but to be set back from the edges of the lower sheet any convenient distance, say one inch, (Figures 2 and 3,) so that, when laid on a. roof', the sheets will lit into each other, as shown in fig. 1, thus forming an even surface. Cement to be laid over these edges, when laying them down, and these edges to be vafterward secured by nails with connectcd heads, (Figure 4,) or rather nails with large heads and two or more prongs, and a coat of cement or other suitable material over all, B, iig. 1. v
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ius- 1. The application of strips of wood, or other suitable material placed edgeways, on the rafters or other support en which the roof` rests, these strips (of any desired thickness) being properly securedand fastened together, and this foundation serves as a. body on which to applywater-proof cement, or other suitable material, substantially as and for the purpose herein specied. y
2. The application of cement, or other: suitable material, to two or more sheets of paper, orother suitable material, to be used in connection with the foundation, as above deseribedfor any other suitable foundation, or separately, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified. i
