SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,812, dated October 31, 1893.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. HAMEL, of Oswego, in the county of Oswego, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flue-Scrapers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the class of fluescrapers which are provided with scraperblades adapted to enter into the flue and expansible circumferentially to conform to the diameter of the fiue and maintain contact with the inner surfaces thereof while operated in the flue; and the invention consists in an improved construction and combination of the constituent members of the flue-scraper as hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.

My improved'fiue scraper consists essentially of the mandrela, the scraper blades b-b pivoted to opposite sides of the mandrel, as shown at 0, and of segmental shape in cross section and tapered from the front or scraping ends rearward," and the sleeve c journaled on the mandrel and provided with the eccentric'grooves -c'c' as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, which grooves engage the rear ends of the blades b-bas clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, said engagement causing the scraper blades to be expanded and contracted by the rotation of the sleeve c upon the mandrel.
To facilitate the operation of assembling the aforesaid constituent members of my flue scraper I resort to the following detail construction and combinations of the parts of said members. The mandrel a I form with a journal -aand with the screwthreaded end portions a"a. Upon the front end portion of the mandrel I screw a head h which is provided with a screwthreaded socket -h'- for the reception of the screw-threaded end of the mandrel. The
sleeve c is smooth bored and slipped on to the mandrel from the rear end thereof until it abuts against the rear end of the socket h' as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Said sleeve is thus seated on the journal hearing a of the mandrel and it is retained on the said journal hearing by means of the ferrule d screwed on to the rear end of the mandrel, said ferrule being of sufficientlength to permit a suitable handle f to be socured therein. The end of the sleeve -c adjacent to the head h is formed with the eccentric grooves c'c' and in order to reduce the cost of the manufacture of said sleeve I form the outer walls of the aforesaid grooves in a separate ring i seated in a rabbet formed on the exterior of the sleeve, said ring being rigidl'y secured to the sleeve by a pin or pins Z passing through the ring and side of the sleeve, the inner side of the said ring being formed with eccentric rabbets constituting the outer walls of the eccentric grooves c'c, the inner walls of said grooves being form ed by corresponding eccentric rabbets on the exterior of the sleeve. The rear ends of the scraper blades bb are in serted'in the aforesaid eccentric grooves, and by turning the sleeve c the engagement of said grooves with the scraper blades causes the same to be expanded or contracted according to the direction in which the sleeve is turned, and in this manner the scraper is adjusted to the internal diameter of the flue to be cleaned so as to be maintained in contact therewith while the scraper is operated or moved longitudinally in the flue. The thin front edges of the scraper blades efiectually clean the flue during the aforesaid operation.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is r 1. The improved flue-scraper consisting of the mandrel a-, the scraper-blades b b pivoted to the sides of said mandrel and of segmental shape in cross-section and tapered from their front or scraping ends rearward, and the sleeve c journaled on the mandrel and provided with the eccentric grooves -cc' engaging the rear ends of the blades and expanding and contracting the the scraper-blades -bb pivoted to the sides of the head -hand having their rear ends seated in the grooves c--c--, substantially as described and shown.
