IMPROVED BLACKING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,780, dated October 31, 1865; antedated August 4, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM TOMLINsON, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Composition for Blacking Leather; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the composition and mode of compounding the same.
My invention relates to a composition or blacking for use on boots, shoes, and other articles of leather, believed to be superior to most blacking now in use in its cheapness, durability, capacity for repelling water, pliability and preservative effect on the leather.
1 take, by measure, as follows: solution of gum tragacanth in water of the consistence of thin mucilage, twelve parts petroleum or coal-oil, one part; simple sirup two parts. Stir the above ingredients until thoroughly blended and bottle for use.
The composition is applied in liquid form to the leather and polished with a brush in the common way.
After the leather has been once well coated it may be afterward polished with a dry brush and a slight sprinkle of water or saliva for ABRAHAM TOMLIN SON Witnesses:
