Description
J. SHAMP. WIRE FENCE.
No. 507,599. v Patented Oct. 31,1893.
NiTEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
JESSE MONROE SHAMP, OF WOOSTER, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO DANIEL D. LEINER, OF SAME PLACE.
WIRE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,599, dated October 31, 1893.
Application filed September 1, 1892. Serial No. 445.4691 fNo model.)
it appertains to make and use the same, ref-' erence being had to the accompanying drawlugs, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention relates to improvements in wire stretchers.
The object of the presentinvention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and effective wire fastener and stretcher, which willenable fence Wires to be drawn and held at any desired tension, and which will permit the tension of fence wires to be readily altered in extreme temperatures to conpensate for their expansion and contraction due to heat and cold.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings-Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a fence provided with wire fasteners constructed inaccordance with this invention, and showing a person in the act of stretching the wire. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view showing one'of the wire fasteners, the lever being in position. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the plates or casings.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates an end post of a fence provided witha series of horizontal wire openings 2 and having secured to it or arranged on it a series of plates or casings 3, provided with vertical openings 4 receiving the adjacent ends of fence wires 5, which extend through the openings 2 of the post 1, and pass through the openings of the plates or casings and extend beyond the same. The plate 3 is approximately rectangular and receives within its opening 4 a wedge 5 which has engaging teeth 6 at its lower edge, and which is adapted to securely hold a fence wire against acciing 4 of the plate 3 inclines downward from the outer face to the inner or rear face of the plate 3; and the opening is of insufficient size its lower edge and the bottom of the opening of the plate.
The plate 3, which may be arranged with either end up is provided at one end with an and having an outer curved face and serving as a fulcrum for a stretching lever 7, whereby a fence wire may be drawn to any desired tension and securely clamped thereat. The
a curved portion or foot 8 adapted to bear against the fulcrum 5 and terminating in a truncated point 9 and having pivoted to it a loop 10. When a wire is to be stretched it is tion or footof the lever 7 is placed against the fulcrum 5 of the plate. The lever 7 in stretching the Wire securely clamps it in its loop 10 by engaging the wire with its end 9 as will readily be seen. any desired tension, and is securely held thereat by the wedge 5.
It will be seen that the wire fastener is simple and inexpensive in construction and efilhold a fence wire at any. desired tension. It will also be apparent that it enables a fence wire to be readily tightened or loosened to vary its tension in extreme temperatures to prevent summer.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacri- The loop 10 and the foot of thelever form a positive wire clamp which is simple in construction and is adapted to readily receive a fence wire and to release the same quickly to The tension of the fence wires securely hold the plates or casings in proper position.

enable the fence wires to be rapidly adjusted. I
What I claim is 1. A wire fastener, comprising a plate having a wire opening and provided with a fulcrum at one side of the opening, and a sliding wedge arranged in the opening, in combination with a lever adapted to bear against the fulcrum and provided with a wire clamp, substantially as described.
2. A wire fastener comprising a plate having a wire opening and provided with an integral enlargement arranged at one side of the opening and having a rounded outer face and forming a fulcrum, and a wedge arranged in the wire opening,in combination with a lever adapted to be fulcrumed on the enlargement and provided with a wire clamp, substantially as described.
3. A wire fastener comprising a plate having a wire opening with one of its end walls inclined and having at one side of the opening an integral enlargement provided with an outer rounded face and forming a fulcrum, and asliding wedge arranged in the wire opening of the plate and provided at its engaging edge with teeth, in combination with a lever having a wire clamp, substantially as described.
4. A wire fastener comprising a plate having a wire opening and provided at one side with a fulcrum having its outer face rounded, and a wedge arranged in the wire opening of the plate, in combination with a lever having a rounded foot terminating in a truncated point and provided thereat with a loop pivoted at opposite sides of the foot and extending beyond the point thereof and adapted to receive the Wire, substantially as described.
5. In a wire stretcher, a lever havinga curved foot and terminating in a truncated point and provided with a wire receiving loop pivoted at opposite sides of the foot and extending beyond the point, substantially as described.
6. A wire fastener comprising a plate having a wire opening with one of its walls inclined, and having at one side of the opening an integral enlargement provided with an outer rounded face and forming afulerum, and. a sliding wedge arranged in the wire opening of the plate and provided at its engaging edge with teeth, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
