To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, THOMAS S. MURPHY, J r., of the city and county of Albany, in'the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Book-Finishing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in machines for the use of book-binders in the operation of finishing books in the process of binding; and the object of my invention is to provide facilities for reducing the cost of binding books by dispensing with a considerable portion of the manual labor usually required and substituting machine work in its stead. This object I attain by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which are herein referred to and form part of this specification, and in which t Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invenion. with one of the counter-weights removed therefrom. As represented in the drawings, A designates the base of the machine which is preferably made in the form shown and is provided, at diametrically opposite points, with lateral Wings, 1, on each of which there is erected avertical guide, 2, for a purpose hereinafter explained; said base also has a centrally-located guide, 3, which forms a foreand-a-ft horizontal guide for' the book-clamping mechanism, and extending laterally from each wing 1, there is a lug, 4: which forms a guide for parts hereinafter described.

hand screw-thread and the other with a lefthand one, so that, when the feed-screw is turned in either direction, the sliding- plates 5 and 6 will be moved at a uniform rate of speed but in opposite directions in respect to each other. The sliding-plate 5 is provided with a fixed jaw, 10, which is made hollow for the purpose of receiving a current of steam when the machine is used for the purpose of gilding the sides of the covers, the jaw 10 then having a design-plate affixed thereto; the sliding-plate 6 is provided with a movablejaw, 11, which is hinged, as at 12, to the sliding-plate 6, and, for the purpose of imparting the required movements to said movablejaw, a toggle-joint, 13, is provided, one extremity of said toggle-joint being hinged to the plate 6 and the opposite extremity hinged to said movable-jaw; the latter is made hollow for the purpose of receiving a current of steam when occasion requires it should be heated. A hand-wheel, let, or other suitable appliance, is provided for the purpose of rotating the feed-screw 8 when occasion requires. Either one, or both, of the jaws 10 and 11 may be provided with a design-plate for effecting the finishing of the covers of the book by the operation of clamping a book in place in the machine.

The studs 15 also pass through slotted openings, 19, in adjustable arms, 20, attached to the pendent members of the swinging-frame C, and through stationary quadrant-gears, D, which rest upon T-headed bearers, 21, adjustably fixed in the blocks 16. The slotted openings 19 will permit the swing ing-frame O to partake of a shifting movement when the centers of the studs 15 are not in exact correspondence to the centers on which the arcs of circles, for the backs of the books,arestruck. The'lowerextremityofeach pendent member, 22, of said swinging-frame, is provided with afore-and-aft rack, 23, whose teeth will mesh into those on the correspondin g quadrant-gear D for the purpose of maintaining the swinging-frame O in its position in the various phases of its swinging movements. The adj ustable-arms 20 are fitted to be adjusted vertically in the pendent members 22 of the swinging-frame O, and for this purpose each of said arms is provided with a slotted-opening, 24, for receiving a bindingholt, 25, for the purpose of securing said arm to the place where it has been adjusted; said vertical adjustment is necessary to adapt the machine for finishing volumes of different width,aud toadaptitto receivequadrant-gears of diiferentsize to correspond to the convexity of the back of different books; aslight difference in the convexity of the back of a book and the curvature of a quadrant-gear is compensated for by the use of a spring, 26, attached to the lower extremity of a screw, 27, in each of the forks 18; each of said screws is provided with a bevel-gear, 28, in which said screw is free to slide vertically, but by which a rotatory motion can be imparted to the screw for the purpose of effecting a vertical adjustment of the forks 18; a short shaft, 29, journaled in one of a pair of brackets, 30, secured to opposite sides of the basepiece A, is provided with a bevel-gear, 31, which meshes into the bevel-gear of the screw on the corresponding side of the machine, and an intermediate shaft, 32, journaled in the brackets 30, is provided with a bevel-wheel, 33, at each end; the bevelwheels 33 mesh into bevel-wheels 28 for the purpose of producing synchronous rotations of the screws 27. At the inner extremity of each of the studs 15 there is pivoted an arm, 34, one of said arms being inclined forward and the other rearward, so as to limit the swinging movement of the frame 0 in either direction; said arms are adjustable, so as to increase or diminish the swinging movement of the frame 0 as occasion may require, and
Depending from the middle of the crossbarof the swinging-frame 0 there is a forkedbracket, E, which has an upand-down movement in said swinging-frame; said bracket is normally retained in its raised position by means of a spring, 37, which bears upon the upper side of the swinging-frame and under a cross-pin, 38, which is inserted through a stem, 39, which extends upwardly from the forked-bracket E, and to which a lever, F, is connected for the purpose of pressing said bracket downwardly when occasion requires; the inner end of said lever is connected by links, 40, to the upper side of the swingingframe 0, and the opposite extremity of said lever is provided with a spring-latch, 41, which is fitted to engage in the notches of a fixed-quadrant, 42, so as to retain the bracket E at a fixed point of depression, and, for the purpose of setting said lever at points differing from those attainable by the notches of said quadrant, the latter is provided with a series of holes, 43, through either of which a pin, 44, may be entered to engage in a corresponding hole in the lever F.
The lower extremity of each pendant of the bracket E is provided with a horizontal groove for receiving a clamping-mechanism, G, for holding a design-plate for finishing the back of the book; said clamping-mechanism maybe rigidly held in the bracket E by means of set-bolts, 45, or it maybe retained therein by means of a friction-device consisting of a spring-depressed bolt, 46, which is fitted to bear upon a rearwardly-extending arm, 47, of the sole-plate of said clamping-mechanism; said bolt is pressed down by the rearmost end of a bifurcated-lever, 48, which is pivoted, as at 49, to the swinging-frame; the foremost end of the lever 48 bears upon a rearwardlyprojecting lip, 50-shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2--of a hand-lever, 51, which is fulcrumed to the forward side of the swingingframe 0; said hand-lever is preferably ar ranged behind a handle, 52, attached to the upper part of the swinging-frame C for the purpose of imparting a swinging movement to said frame; by this arrangement of said hand-lever and handle, an operative is enabled to manipulate the swinging-frame C and the friction-device by using one hand for that purpose.
The swinging-frame G is provided with dependent counter-weights, 53, for the purpose of balancing the weight of the upper part of the swinging-frame.
The sole-plate H of the clamping-mechanism G is made hollow for the purpose of admitting steam into itfor heating the designplate that is clamped on the lower face of said sole-plateand a flexible steam-tubing, 54, is connected to said sole-plate for the purpose of conveying a supply of steam into the interior of the same; an outlet-steam-pipe, 55- also made of flexible material-connects the opposite end of the sole-plate H with the fixed-j aw 10 of the book-clampin g mechanism B, for the purpose of conveying steam into the jaws of said clamping-mechanism; a fiexible steam-pipe, 56, connects said fixed-jaw with the movable-jaw 11 of the book-clamping mechanism, and a flexible waste-pipe, 57, is connected to said movable-j aw for the purpose of carrying off the waste steam and the condensed water from the movable-jaw.
The steam heating attachments for the clamping mechanisms are only required when the books are to be finished in gold or silver, but, when the ornamentation is to be effected with ink, the heating of the clamping-mechanisms may be dispensed with. Y
The lower face of the sole-plate H is pro vided with a pair of movable jaws, 58, which are each provided with ascrew-tapped lug,
59, fitted to slide in a transverse groove orway, 60, formed in the lower face of said sole plate; one of said lugs has a left-hand screwthread tapped therein, and the other has a right-hand thread; a feed-screw, 61, is journaled, as at 62, to rotate in the groove 60, said feed-screw having a right-hand'screw-thread formed on the part extending from one side of said journal,and a left-hand screw-thread on the part extending in the opposite direction from said journal, the right-handed and left-handed screw-threaded portions being fitted to engage in the corresponding lugs 59, so that when the feed-screw 61 is rotated in one direction itwill cause the jaws 58 to be moved at equal speed toward the center line of the sole-plate H, and when said feed-screw is rotated in an opposite direction the jaws 58 will have a uniform movement from each other. The feed-screw 61 is provided with a hand-wheel, 63, or other suitable appliance, for imparting a rotatory motion thereto.
An adjustable end-guide, 64, is attached to the machine for the purpose of forming an abutment against which the end of a bookwill take when being adjusted in the machine,
and, when many volumes of the same kind are to be finished, said guide will effect a great saving of time in adjusting the volumes in the machine.
As shown in Fig. 8, the jaws 10 and 11 are each provided with a design-plate, 65, for imprintinga design on the covers of a book; and as a means for attaching said design-plates to said jaws, each of the former is provided with angle-pieces, 66, which carry a set-screw, 67, fitted to bear against the end of the jaw to which the design-plate isappropriated; instead of a plain border, as shown in Fig. 8, said design-plate may have any preferred ornamentation to be impressed on the covers of the books.
My machine operates in the following man ner: Premising that when the books are to be finished in gilt, the gold-leaf is first applied to each book by means of the usual sizing used for that purpose, after the swingingframe 0 is adjusted to the required height by means of the screws 27and the end-gage 64 is adjusted to the required point to which the end of the book is to be placed, the arms 34 being adjusted in such manner that the rearmost of said arms will bring the rearmost edge of the design-plate-which is clamped between the jaws 58-into coincidence with the rearmost edge of the back of a book held in the book-clamping mechanism B, and the foremost of said arms being adjusted to stop the movement of the swinging-frame C at a 'point where the design-plate will have been impressed over the width of the back of the bookthe swinging-frame 0 being at a state of rest against the rearmost arm 34 and the bracket E being at its raised position-the lever F is swung downward until the design-plate has the required pressure against the ba'ckofthe book in the clamping mechanism. When said lever has attained the last named position the spring-latch 41 will automatically engage in a notch of the quadrant 42, wherebythe bracket E will heretained in a required position to allow the design plate to have the required pressure on the back of the book during the entire time said desigu-plate'is making its movement over said back; the last named movementis effected by swinging'the swinging-frame 0 forward until it is stopped by the foremost arm 34, at which point the foremost edge of the design-plate for the back will reach the limit of its impression on said back; this point being attain'ed,the spring-latch 41 is released and the bracket Eand its attachmentsis from its engagement with the quadrant/ 42 returned to its normal position'by-the resilience of the spring 37. When this has been accomplished the swinging-frame O is'swungl backward-against the rearmost arm 34-and the finished book removed from the clamping-mechanism B. The machinewill then be in condition for the reception of another book, and for a repetition of the operation ust described.
This machine has no relation to an emboss-- ing machine that is used for embossing the covers for books, audit should not be confounded With machines of that'class; said em bossing machines perform their functions before the covers are applied to the'books, and not afterward, as my machine does.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a book-finishing machine, the combination with a base provided with a bookclamping mechanism, a swinging-frame journaled in boxes on said base, and a verticallyadjustable bracket carried by said swingingframe and provided with a clamping-mechanism whereby design plates for finishing the backs of books can be attached thereto, as and for the purpose herein specified.
2. The combination of a swinging-frame having pendent side-arms having a toothedrack on each of said arms, said racks being arranged to extend both forwardly and rearwardly of said side-arms, and segmental-gears v held in a stationary position and fittedto' mesh into the teeth of said racks, the centerpoint for the pitch-line of the teeth of said segmental-gears coinciding with the pivotalcenter of said swinging-frame, as and for the purpose herein specified.
3. The combination of a swinging-frame provided with means substantially as described for retaining a design-plate thereon, said design-plate holding mechanism being adjustable toward and from the pivotal center of said swinging-frame, vertically-adjustable arms attached to the side-arms of said swinging-frame and provided with transversely-slotted openings for receiving the pivots for said swinging-frame, and verticallyadjustable forks provided with eyes at their upper extremity for receiving said pivots, as and for the purpose herein specified.
4. The combination of a swinging-frame provided with a design-plate holder that is adjustable toward and from the pivotal center of said swinging-frame, vertically-adjustable arms attached to the side-arms of the swinging-frame and provided with transversely slotted openings, vertically adj ustable forks fitted to span the lower member of said vertically-adj ustable arms and provided with eyes for receiving the pivots for said swinging-frame, said pivots passing through said eyes and slotted openings of said ad j'ustable arms, adjusting-screws whereby said forks are adjusted, and springs on the lower extremity of said adj Listing-screws, as and for the purpose herein specified.
5. The combination of a book-clamping mechanism provided with hollow clampingjaws, a hollow sole'plate provided with movable-jaws fitted to retain a design-plate, and flexible pipes for conducting heated fluid into and out of said clamping-jaws and sole-plate, as and for the purpose herein specified.
6. The combination of a swinging-frame provided with a design-plate holder that is vertically-adj ustable toward and from the pivotal-center of said swinging-frame, and adjustable stop-arms which are pivoted to a contiguous part of the machine so as to lie in the path of the movement of said swingingarm, as and for the purpose herein specified.
7. A book-clamping mechanism consisting of two sliding-plates which are fitted to receive a movement toward and from each other by means of a right-and-left feed-screw, one of said sliding-plates being provided witha fixed jaw, and the other having a movable jaw hinged to it, and a toggle-joint having one end jointed to said movable jaw and its opposite end jointed to the sliding-plate to which said movable jaw is attached, said toggle-joint being arranged for swinging said movable jaw to each extremity of its movement, said clamping mechanism being adapted to hold a book in an immovable position, as and for the purpose herein specified.
