T. LAFON.
BOLT.
No. 507,277. Patented 001;. 24, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TOUSSAINT LAFON, OF BORDEAUX, FRANCE.
B 0 LT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,277, dated October 24, 1893.
Application filed May 16, 1893. Serial No. 474,427. (No model.) Patented in France March 12, 1892.110. 220,083.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TOUSSAINT LAFON, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at Bordeaux, in the Departmentof the Gironde, Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolts, (for which I have received Letters Patent in France, dated March 12, 1892, No. 220,083;) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to produce a safety-bolt for doors, which cannot readily be unfastened, but will be simple in construction and put and held in position by the mere closing of the door without nails or screws, the same being also easily carried in the pocket. To this end I make use of the construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of the bolt and its attachments folded to be carried in the pocket. Fig. 2 represents the same in position to be applied to the door. Fig. 3 represents a front elevation of the same. Fig. 4. represents a similar view of a modification. Fig. 5 represents a longitudinal section of the same on the line w-o: of Fig. 4, the bolt proper being shown in elevation; and Fig. 6 represents a vertical cross section on the line ocw of Fig. 5.
In the said drawings a designates the baseplate or frame of the bolt which is provided with arched guides 0 (Figs. 1, 2 and 3) for the endwise reciprocation of the bolt b, having the usual handle d. The said base-plate has a small fastening plate e hinged to its forward end and provided with spurs f, adapted to e11- ter the woodwork of the jamb, when the door is closed against the said hinged plate, the latter then being in the crack of the door and the bolt being held in horizontal position. In case the door does not fit tightly I provide a facing shoe or reinforce g having a small screw g formed with it which turns into a similarly threaded hole or recess of the said hinged plate. The thickness of the latter is thereby practically increased, so that the door will come in contact with it, and operate as stated.
The modification illustrated in Figs. 4, 5-
and 6 is provided with a tubular casing h con taining a spring m which bears against the bolt and tends to shoot the same. The said casing is also provided with a longitudinal slot 1; in which the handle 01 moves backward and forward with the bolt, this slot having a lateral holding notch into which the said handle is turned to keep the bolt in its position of Withdrawal.
When the bolt is to be carried in the pocket or reduced to small compass for any other purpose, the plate 6, as shown in Fig. 1, is folded over on the base-plate a with the spurs f overlapping the latter. The facing shoe g, having previously been detached, is secured to the said base-plate by turning the screw g into a suitable screw-threaded hole or recess formed in the said plate. This is the position ordinarily taken by the said reinforce or facing shoe when not in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The bolt b and the base-plate a in combination with hinged spurred plate e and the reinforce g which is provided with a fastening screw, both the said hinged plate and the said base plate being provided with a recess to receive the said screw, in order that the said reinforce may be attached to one or the other of the said parts at will substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
TOUSSAIN T LAFON.
