DEVICE FOR USE WHEN REPAlRlNG 0R LAYlNG PIPES IN STREETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,868,
dated October 17, 1893.
Application filed June 22, 1893. Serial 110,478,433. (No model.) 3
T0 at whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, FRANKLIN M. ASHLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Device for Use when Repairing or Laying Pipes in Streets, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention, is to provide means, whereby, the way for foot passengers is obstructed as little as possible, in the work of repairing, or laying pipe in the streets, and to lessen the expense of said work.
To this end, my invention consists in the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1. is a view in perspective. Fig. 2. is an end view; and Fig. 3. is an end view of the device when folded together for transportation.
Similar letters, several views.
a, represents the floor of my device, consisting of boards, fastened to sleepers b; and a, represents the upright or back of the device, consisting of boards, secured to the timbers b. The timbers b, and the sleepers b,'are hinged together by a hinge e, which allows the back and the floor, to be folded together,
refer to similar parts in the as shown in Fig. 3. for transportation. The outer ends of the timbers and sleepers, are provided with hooks, over which, the eyes in the ends of the rod 0, are adapted to pass, and hold the floor and back rigidly in the angular position shown, when the device is in use.
The device is preferably made in lengths convenient to handle.
The operation and advantages of the device, are as follows-A sufficient number of lengths of the device, are placed end to end, along the edge of the street where it is proposed to lay pipe, and the earth and stone excavated in the operation are thrown upon the floor of the device, which holds the same within a limited space. The upright a, prevents the earth, as it is thrown from the excavation, from being spread over a large space, and impeding travel along the side walk, and also, in connection with the floor a, holds the. earth in the best possible condition to be rapidly returned to the excavation, when the pipe is laid.
I claim- The herein described device for holding earth, from excavation in the streets, consisting of the floor a,'and back a, adapted to be held substantially at right angles with each other when in use; and folded together, for transportation, substantially as shown and described.
FRANKLIN M. ASHLEY.
