BOOM-CHAIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,790, dated October 17, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASA MUTOHENBACKER, of Rosseau Falls, in the township of Cardwell, in the district of Muskoka, and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Boom-Chains, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to connect the toggle to its link in such a manner that it may be readily set to act as a lock to secure together the two parts of the chain and as shown may be drawn through the logs without the toggle interfering with the free passage of the said chain, and it consists, essentially, of a toggle link made of square or other angled metal, the hole in the toggle for the link being similarly shaped, substantially as hereinafter more particularly explained.
Figure 1, is a view of a chain provided with my improvement, the toggle being set to act as a lock. Fig. 2, is a view showing the toggle set so as not to obstruct the free longitudinal movement of the chain.
In the drawingsA, represents the toggle link of the chain, and'B, the toggle. It will be observed that the toggle link A, is made of square metal except at one end a, where it connects with the next link of the chain, which portion a of the toggle link is preferably made round or at any rate smaller in diameter than the main body of the link. A square hole is made in the toggle B, to permit the said toggle to fit and be longitudinally adjustable on the toggle link A. As the portion a, of the link is smaller in diameter than the main body of the link, the toggle B, may be revolved by moving it to the portion a.
In order to lock the toggle B, as indicated in Fig. 1, the said toggle is moved to the portion a, and is set so that it will pass through the ring 0, and when through it is set so as to pass up the main body of the link A, into the position it is indicated in Fig. 1, when, owing to the square form of the link A, the toggle B, cannot be shaken into position so as to pass through the ring 0, which formsa constant look so that the connection of the chain cannot possibly be shakenloose. This fact is of great importance, as all mill owners know that boom chains are constantly lost by the toggle being shaken clear of the ring.
Another advantage of my invention is that the toggle by being set as shown in Fig 2, may be drawn through the hole in the log without any fear of the toggle interfering with the free passage of the chain.
I do not confine myself to the rectangular or square form of the metal used in my toggle link, as any shape which will prevent the toggle revolving on it will answer the purpose; but
What I do claim as my invention is- 1. A toggle link having different diameters in different parts, in combination with a toggle having an opening therein to receive the larger diameter of the link, and constructed to preventit from turning therein, whereby said toggle can be turned only when it is around the smaller diameter, substantially as described.
2. A toggle link made of angular metal and having a reduced round portion, in combination with a toggle having an angular opening therein shaped to fit the angular part of the link, whereby said toggle can be turned only when placed over the round portion of said link, substantially as described.
