JOHN B. RIDDLE, 0F -MORGANFIELD, KENTUCKY.
CAR-COUPLING.y
SPECIFICATION forming part-of Letters Patent No. 506,075, dated October 3, 1893.
Application filed July 15, 1893. Serial No. 480.647. (No model.)
To 'c1/ZZ whom it may' concern:
Be it known that I, JOHNB'. RIDDLE, a citizen of the UnitedStates of America, residing at Morganield, in the county of Union and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled 1n the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication. i
This invention relates to improvements in car couplings, and is designed as an limprovement upon Patent No. 497,213, issued to me May 9, 1893.-
The present invention consists in providing means for raising the coupling pin from the side or top of the car and for setting the tripping-plate without the necessity of going between the cars.
The invention further consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of a car coupling constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View, and Figwl is a detail perspective view of the link support detached.
The drawhead and parts carried thereby are of substantially the same construction shown and described in my prior patent hereinbefore referred to. l
To the arm D of the coupling pin are attached ilexible connections or chains d and d', the chain d extending to the roof or upper part of the car so that the operator located at that point can draw upon the chain and elevate the coupling-pin, while the chain CZ is connected to the crank-arm of a shaft E which extends beyond the side of the car and is provided with a crank-handle E for operating the same. By drawing on these flexible connections the operator not only raises the pin but also causes the arm D to enterthe notch or catch b2 formed to one side of the slot in the housing B.
The side of the car has attachedfthereto a recessed block f for supporting the crankhandle E of the shaft E.
The tripping-plate F, which is attached to the car body in the rear of the housing B and a little to one side of the' same has attached thereto an operating rod F the outer end of which passes through a loop or staple f and is bent to engage with said staple and limit the swinging movement of. the plate in one direction. It will be seen that by moving the rod F the plate F can be adjusted to position instead of changing the construction of the drawhead to receive the same I form or attach on one end of said link elevating device a pintle g and provide the other end with a screw-threaded aperture .g with which the threaded end of the'bent armHis adapted to engage, and by this construction I am enabled to dispense with an opening in the drawhead of suiicient size to pass the link elevating device through the same, and also kdispense with the retaining plate. The end of the arm h is provided with an eye to which is attached a flexible connection L, which may extend to the top of the car for raising or lowering the link elevating device from that point when desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a car coupling constructed substantially as shown, and provided with a drawhead having a tube or housing attached thereto, said housing having a slot with a notch formed in `one of its side walls to receive an arm carried by the coupling-pin, a plate or projection hinged to the car body for engagement with the arm of the coupling-pin, and a rod extending from said plate to one side of the car body, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a car coupling constructed substantially as shown, and provided with a drawhead having a tube or housing attached thereto, said tube havinga slot withanotch formed in one of its side walls, a coupling pin having IOO a projecting arm which Ais adapted to engage with said notch, and flexible connections attached to said arm, one of which extends to a crank-arm while the other extends to the top of the car, for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination With a ear couplingT constructed substantially as shown and provided with a vertically movable coupling-pin having an outwardly projecting arm, of a housing provided with a catch for sustaining the coupling-pin in an elevated position, means substantially as shown for elevating the coupling pin either from the side or top` of the car, a hinged plate having an operating rod which extends to one side of the car, said plate being adapted to be moved in and out of line with the arm of the coupling-pin, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
