HARVEY SMITH, OF OOFFEYVILLE, KANSAS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,565, dated August 30, 1881.
Application filed July 15, 1831. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oott'eyville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Couplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal longitudinal section, ofmy improved car-coupling, and Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view of the same.
This invention relates to improvements in car-couplings, its object being to insure the falling of the pin and the coupling of the ears, and it consists of a tubular right-angled arm, having a shaft passing down into the drawhead, and provided with a cam or projection adapted to stand in the way of the incoming link, and when struck by the link to so control the movement of the arm which carries the pin as to bring the arm with the pin in the line with and permit the falling of the pin through the aperture in the draw-head, and to secure the link, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A is the draw-head, of the usual construction. B is a right-angled arm or holder for the pin, with its vertical portion provided with an aperture, 1), extending through it to receive the pin (J. The pin 0 is constructed of round or flat metal, with an offset or shoulder at a sut'ficient distance from the lower end to rest upon and support the link in a position to enter the drawhead A as the cars come together. The rear turns in the draw-head A. This shaft has awing or cam, c, affixed to the same at such an angle as that when the tubular part of the holder B, with its pin, is swung out of line or to the side of the pin-hole in the draw-head, supporting the pin in an elevated position upon the latter, it will stand in the way of the incoming link, and when struck by the link will swing the tubular part of the arm or holder, with the pin, around in line with the pin-hole in the draw-head. When the pin reaches this point it will fall into the oblong opening of the link, and thus securely couple the cars. A recess is provided in the draw-head to permit the wing or cam to swing in as it is struck by and to allow the link to pass it. A chain, (1, connects the pin to the arm, and to this chain is suspended a small pin, 6, which is inserted into an aperture, e, in the coupling-pin when it is required to support the latter, which becomes necessary to keep the cars uncoupled when in close proximity.
Having thus fully described my invention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a car-coupling, the draw-head A, provided with the pin 0, the right-angled tubular pinholder or arm B, having the shal't B, provided with the wing or cam c,adapted, when the arm with the coupling-pin is out of line with the pin-hole in the draw-head,to stand in the way of the incoming coupling-link, and when struck bythe link to swing the arm and thepin around and allow the pin to drop into the pin-hole in the draw-head, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARVEY SMITH. Witnesses W. A. PEFFER, Jr., J. MOOREARY.
