A. G. PROHL.
BOOK HOLDER OR COPY STAND- No. 506,015. Patented Oct. 3, 1893.
UNITED STATES.
PATENT ;OFFI cE.
ALBERT (J. PROI-IL, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
BOOK-HOLDER OR COPY-STAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,015, dated October 3, 1893. Application filed May 8, 1893- Serial No. 473,438. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, ALBERT O. PROHL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book- Holders or Copy-Stands; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to book-holders and copy-stands, and consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts as will be fully set forth hereinafter, and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device, in position for use. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, with the parts folded together for storage. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view, on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 4=-4= of .Fig. 2.
My device comprises a suitable backing A,
' made of any suitable material, such as a sheet of tin-plate, or other sheet-metal, and which may be lacquered, japanned, painted, or otherwise ornamented. The upper and lower edges, a, b, of this sheet are preferably turned over, as shown, the upper edge a inclosing the upper part of a practically rectangular wire frame, B, made of a single strip of wire, whose ends are bent toward each other, at the said upper part of the frame and concealed by said upper edge a of the backing A, while the corresponding lower part of said wire frame is formed with two loops, 0 c, to receive the obliquely bent portions 6 e of the legs or supports of the device, when the same is adjusted into position for use, as shown in Fig. 1. These legs or supports are each made of a single strip of wire, having a vertical or straight portion 0, preferablyterminating at the bottom in a scroll, or inturned end 01 forming a foot, these parts 0 being held to the backing A, by inturned side edges h h of the latter; from the upper end of this straight portion 0 the wire is continued in an oblique line, forming the portion e, and thence at an obtuse angle f and terminatingin an upward angular bend g, the part f forming the other foot of the leg or support when the device is portions of the backing A, the side edges in use, and the part 9 bent backward to be parallel with the part c forming the front support of the book or copy. At points adjacent to the upper and lower thereof are cut to form narrow tongues t t,
bent back in a direction opposite to that of the described inturned side edges h h, for the reception of a slate or tablet D, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. This slate or tablet D may be of any suitable material having an erasablewriting surface, such as stone, paper, celluloid or silicated card-board,and is slipped to place against the reverse side of the backing A,being held between that and the described tongues M, the lower edge of the slate or tablet resting in the described upturned lower edge b of said backing.
The operation of my device will be readily apparent from the foregoing'description of its construction, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. When not in' use, the device can be folded into very compact form, as indicated in Fig. 2, in which condition it will occupy very little space on a desk or table, and when extended, as shown'in Fig. 1, makes a most convenient book-holder or copy-stand, the reverse side with the surface D affording an accessible place for any memorandum, or special directions regarding the book or copy upon the front of the device.
Having'thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture, 85 the herein described book-holder and copystand, comprising a suitable backing of sheetmetal or analogous material, a wire frame of practically rectangular shape pivotally attached to the inturned upper edge of said backing and having rectangularly projecting loops in its continuous lower portion, and angularly bent wire legs or supports, also pivotally secured to said backing and adapted for engagement with the said loops in the said wire frame, substantially as set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, the herein described book-holder and copystand, comprisinga suitable backing of sheetmetal or analogous material, a wire frame of 100 practically rectangular shape pivotally sethe latterand bent back, and by the upturned cured to said backing by the inturned upper lower edge of said backing, substantially as edge of the latter, and having loops in its as set forth.
