UNTTR STATES PATENT Tries.
ERNES'I` SCHOLZ, OF MCKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOOL FOR REAMING THE ENDS OF PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,960, dated October 3, 1893.
Application filed June 7, 1893. Serial No. 476,891. (No model.) i
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNEST SoHoLz, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Roaming the Ends of Pipe; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved tool for reaming the ends of pipe, and consists in certain details of construction, and combination of parts as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings FigureV l is a side elevation of my improved tool which is constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the radial clamps. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the cutters. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a portion of a pipe partlyin section, showing one end as it appears when cut with the ordinary pipe cutter, and the other end iinished with my improved reaming tool.
To put my invention into practice I provide a shank 1 of a suitable size and provide the same with a head for the purpose of attaching the tool to the revolving head of the machine for `giving the same a rapid rotary movement, and the other end of the said shank having a corrugated point 9 whereby the cuttings may pass into the pipe to prevent clog- This shank l is provided with grooves 3 formed in the direction of its length, and arranged in pairs radially about the same. Arranged in each of these grooves 3 are cutters 4, provided With cutting edges 5 at each end, and each pair having the beveled cutting edges arranged in opposite directions. VTo hold these cutters in positionI arrange a clamp 7 about the same, having radial recesses formed therein to correspond to the position of the cutters, and for the reception of movable pieces 6. These pieces 6 are T- shaped in cross section, and rest on the top of the cutters 4, and are held rigidly with the cutters by means of set screws 8 passing through the clamp 7.
In operation, the tool is given a rapid rotary movement as above described, and the end of the pipe arranged over the projecting end of the shank l to properly center the'said pipe.l Pressure is applied endwise of the pipe and the rough end such as shown at the left of Fig. 5 is realned as shown at the right of the same Iigure.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein described tool for reaming pipe, consisting of the shank 1 provided with a taperingcorrugated point and a series of grooves arranged in pairs, and extending in the direction of its length, the cutters constructed as described arranged in the said grooves, the clamp arranged about the said cutters having recesses for the reception of clamping pieces to engage with the top of each of the cutters, and the set screws passing radially through the said clamp to engage with the movable clamps, all arranged and combined for service substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto ax my signature this 21st day of March, A. D. 1893.
