ALBERT L. PLATT, OF CLINTON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES H. CONKLIN AND FRANK C. DAVIDSON, OF SAME PLACE.
NUTMEG-GRATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,886, dated October 3, 1893.
Application filed February 6, 1893. Serial No. 461,192. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. PLATT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Clinton, in the county of De Witt and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nutmeg-Graters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in nutmeg graters, the object being to provide a novel construction of the same, whereby I secure superior advantages with respect to economy in construction and efliciency in use.
The invention consists essentially in a case or block of any suitable material, having two holes or apertures extending therethrough at right angles to, and intersecting each other, and a rotatable grater located in one of said apertures consisting of a spiral coil of stout wire having a nicked periphery, one of the ends of said Wire extending centrally through the coil and bent into a crank and journaled in a plate secured to said block or case, as willbe hereinafterfully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective View of a nutmeg grater constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the grater detached. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a modified construction of the block or case.
In the said drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a case or rectangular block of wood or other suitable material, having two holes or apertures 2 and 3, extending therethrough at right angles to and intersecting each other, at or near the center thereof.
Located in the hole or aperture 2, is the grater consisting of a piece of stiff wire bent into a spiral coil 4, one end of which is bent inwardly and extended centrally through the coil to the opposite end thereof, forming an arm 5. The wire is then bent at right angles to arm 5, and its end bent outwardly forming a crank 6. an aperture in the plate 7, secured to said case or block which forms a bearing for the arm 5. The periphery of the spiral coil is formed with a number of nicks 8 at suitable points.
The operation is as follows: The grater is inserted in the aperture 2, with the cranked end passing through the aperture in the plate 7, which forms a bearing for the'arm 5 thereoff. By now placing a nutmeg in the aperture 3, above the grater and then rotating the latter the nicked or roughened periphery of the coil will act upon the nutmeg and grate or abrade the same, the powdered nutmeg escaping at the lower end of the hole or aperture 3.
From the above it will be seen that the coil is supported at the end opposite the crank by the arm 5, and that the latter has a central bearing in the plate 7, thus producingavery spiral coil with a nicked periphery and one end of said wire or rod extending centrally through said coil and through the aperture in said plate, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the. foregoing as my own I have hereunto atfixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT L. PLATT.
