Smuamfozx NITED STATES PATENT OFFICEe JOHN H. KESTER, OF WINSTON, NORTH CAROLINA.
MACHINE FOR CLAMPING AND HOLDING BOXESCONTAINING PLUG-TOBACCO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,881, dated October 3, 1893.
Application filed November 5, 1892. Serial No. 451,127. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. KESTER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Winston, county of Forsyth, State of North Carolina, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Clamping and Holding Boxes Containing Tobacco While Pressing Contents and Putting in the Head; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and specification, and to the letters marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in machines for clamping and holding boxes containing plug tobacco, while the contents are being compressed or compacted by suitable machinery, and its object is two-fold: first, to provide an arrangement of machinery by means of which the screw from which the pressure is obtained to compress the tobacco, may be easily and quickly brought into position centrally over the box of tobacco, or moved to one side, as desired, to enable operator to nail in head of box or to remove box from machine; second, to provide a means of easily and quickly raising the box of tobacco above the clamping plates by placing the foot upon the treadle, thus enabling operator to remove box by hand.
My invention consists of the novel construction and combination of parts as shown in the accompanying drawings and hereinafter fully described.
Figure 1., is a front view of a machine to which my improvements are applied. Fig. 2., is a side view of same.
In the drawings the letter A., indicates the base or bed plate of the machine mounted upon the legs indicated by letters B. B., and carrying upon its upper surface the clamping plates (3., operated by the angular ring D.
E. E. represent two tracks or ways secured one on each side of machine to the legs B. B., and designed to receive the rollers or wheels F. F., which are properly secured to the foot pieces or brackets G. G.
H. H. indicate vertical stress bars securely fastened at their lower ends to the brackets G. G., and at their upper ends to the cross head I., said cross head being provided at its center J., with female threaded hole through which works the screw K, said screw being provided with the hand Wheel L.,at its upper with or secured to the bed and are recessed at the rear so that when the screw K., is moved forward into position, indicated by dotted lines and centrally over the clamping arrangement, the stress bars H. H., pass into said recesses, the top surfaces of brackets G. G., sliding under the bottom surface of bed plate, thus forming a substantial resistance to upward pull of stress bars H., when pressure is applied by screw K.
P. P.,indicate a treadle hinged at its back end to leg B., and projecting forward sufficiently to permit of easy access by foot of operator, and connected at or near its center by link or rod 62., to the lever B. B, said lever being provided with, and swinging upon a hinge bolt at its center and resting at end opposite to treadle connection under center of pad or plate S. By this device it will be seen that when the operator by placing his foot upon the treadle P., and depressing it moves the outward end of the lever R., downward, the inner end is raised, carrying with it the pad 8., to upper position shown by dotted lines 5 thus raising the box of tobacco resting on pad 8., in the clamping arrangement 0.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, viz:
1. In a machine for clamping and holding tobacco boxes, the combination with the bed and the supporting legs, of the clamping plates and means for actuating the same, the tracks or ways secured to the sides of the machine, the brackets provided with rollers engaging with said ways, the vertical bars connected with said brackets, the cross head provided with a screw threaded aperture, the
3. In a machine for clamping and holding tobacco boxes, the combination with the supporting legs, the base or bed and the clamping plates, of the treadle pivoted at one end to one of said legs the transverse lever pivoted to said base or bed and its free end passing through an aperture therein, the pad resting upon said end of the lever, and the connecting rod hinged to said treadle and pivoted to said lever, substantially as described.
J. H. KESTER.
