E. E. CROCKER.
` BICYCLE HANDLB BAR. No. 603,l77. PatentedApr z, 1898.
amo-ur f UNIT STATES PATENT v OF ICE,-
EDWARD EVELIN CROCKER, oF MCKENZIE, TENNESSEE.
BICYCLE HANDLE-BAR,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,177, dated April 26, 1898.
Application filed August 31, 1897. Serial No. 60,107. (NomOdeL) I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AEDWARD EVELIN CROCKER, a citizen of the United States,"residing at McKenzie, in the county of Oarroll and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle Handle- Bars and I do herebydeclare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art 'to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in bicycles, and has more particular relation to bicycle handle-bars of the adjustable type.
v The invention consists of thecombination, with a bicycle-head, of a casing mounted thereon, a handle-bar constructed of two movable connected sections, a spring pressed looking-pawl for said sections, and a lever mounted on one of the handle-bar sections and connected to said looking-pawl.
The invention also consists of certain other novel constructions combinations, and ar- 'rangements of parts, all of`which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the' accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l represents a perspective View of a head of a bicycle with my invention applied ther-eto. Fig. 2 represents a central vertical transversesection through the same, and Fig; 3 represents a horizontal section through the containingcasing on the line of the locking-pawl.
1 in the drawings represents the head of the bicycle; 2, the containin g-casin g mounted thereon; 3 3, the handle-bar sections; 4:, the
looking-pawl, and 5 the operating-handle; Said casing 2 comprises side plates 6 6, connecting top and bottom cross-plates 7 7 ,which are suitably bolted thereto, so that the interior of the casing may be readily reached when so desired.
The -handle-bar sections 3 3 may be of any desired shape or conformation and are each provided. at' their inner ends with flattened v segmental portions 8, formed on their periphwalls ofthe casing 2. One of the segmental portions 8 is provided with a plurality of locking-apertures 11, arranged in a concen'tric circle about its pivot and adapted to be engaged by a stud 12 of the looking-pawl 4. Said pawl 4 comprises a flat spring 13, secured at one end to the casing 2, so that its free end will form a yielding support for the stud 12, which latter passes through a suitable aperture formed in the casing 2, so as to enter any one of the apertures 11, as before stated, and thus lock the handle-bars in their raised or lowered or any intermediate position. Sad pawl 4 is operated by a bell-c'ank lever 14, jourualed in apertured lugs 15, mounted upon the casing 2. Said bell-crank lever comprises a journal portion 16, a crank-bend 17, having aneye and attached at one end of said journal portion, and a plate or leaf 18, which latter projects under the free end of the spring 13, so as to raise the same when' the journal portion 16 is rotated. The crank-bend 17 is connected ,by a suitable cord or wire 19 to the operating-handle 5, which latter is pivotally mounted upon or near the end of one of the handle-bar sections, so as to occupy a position where it may be readily grasped by the fingers.
I do not care to limit myself to the peculiar application of a cord or wire for connecting the bell-crank lever to the Operating-han dle, as any desired intermediate arrangement of levers or rods may be employed with equal facility.
Itwill be observed from the foregoing description that it is not necessary to stop the machine in order to raise or lower the handlebars to the desired position, as the operation of the handle 5 will immediately withdraw the stud 12 from the aperture 11, within which it is resting, and thus permit the handle-bars to be raised or lowered to the desired position by the release of said handle.
IOO
mounted in said casing, one of them provided with a plurality of openings, a spring-pressed locking-pawl attached to the casing oppositc the section having openings, an Operatinghzndle pivoted to the opposing handle-bar section, and intermediate connections between the opcrating-handle and pawl, substantially as described.
In testimony Whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDXVARD EVELIN CROCKER.
