HAND-STAMP AND EM BOSSING-PRESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,556, (lated October 24, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BURROWS, of of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Hand Stamp and Embossing-Press; andIdo hereby declare the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is afrontelevation of ahand-stamping and embossing-press constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan ot'same.

My invention consists in a novel arrangement of'a movable horiZontally-swinging hand printing-stamp and a hand embossing-press moving in aixed arm attached to the same standard in which the arm bearing the printingstamp swings.
- It also consists in the attachment of an inkfountain and inking-ribbon to the printingstamp in such manner that the ribbon used to prplduce the impression is properly inked at w1 It further consists in the construction ofthe bed with a recess so arrangedin relation tothe embossing and printing stamp as to allow the printing-stamp, which swings horizontally a limited distance, to make an impression on any surface beneath the bed, such as that of a book or of a detached sheet which is too large to pass under the printing-head.
To enable others to construct my invention and apply it to use, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A represents the bed-plate, having an elastic impression-surface, l, and a hard embossing-surface, 2, the center ofthe two being apart from each other at an angle ot about from eighty degrees to ninety degrees from the center of a standard, B, erected on the said bedplate, in which there is formed, between the said surfaces, an opening, G, over the center of which the printing-head D may be swung.
The standard B may be cast in a piece with the base A, and the stationary arm F, bearing the embossing-head G, which moves in a vertical direction through the upright slotted bearing H at the extremity of the said arm F, may be cast in the saine piece. The upper part of the standard B has in it a socket, b, in which is :fitted the stem or pivot b ofthe swinging arm 1, which has the printing-head D tted into an upright guide at its outerextremity.
Both the embossing and printing heads are kept clear from the impression-surface, when not in use, by means of spiral springs S, inthe mannerof the corresponding parts ofthe presses in common use.
The swing of the arm I is limited, by its being provided with radial shoulders or stops t' 2, which, when the arm is swung into either direction, come into contact with corresponding tixed radial stops or shoulders i* in, on the immovable arm F.
E is an adjustable collar, having on it, on opposite sides, two small `"emi-cylindrical boxes or fountains, K and L, in each of which is a small roller, k, whichif turned on its axis by a small milled wheel, l, on one end. To each one ofthe said rollers k is attached one end ot' aribbon, r, of suitable width andlength, which passes under the face otl the printing-stamp, the said ribbon passing through slots s s2 in the inner side ot'. saidboxes, a-nd beingwound onto the said rollers.
The boX or fountain K is supplied with the necessary ink, with which the ribbon contained on the roller therein is kept saturated untilrequired for use, when the ribbon is wound onto the opposite roller and over the printing-surface through a slot, s2, in the inner side of the fountain K. This slotis furnished with a pliable or elastic scraper, m, for the purpose of removing all surplus ink from the ribbon previous to its passing out over the printing-surface.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The arrangement ot a stationary guide, H, for an embossing-stamp, and ot' a horizontally swinging printing-stamp, in connection with one standard and bed-plate, substantially as herein described.
2. The opening C in the bed-plate A, arranged in relation with the swinging printinghead D for the purpose and in the manner substantially as herein set iorth.
3. The ink-fountain applied directly to the printing-head of a hand-stamp, substantially as herein described.
