TUYERE. No. 505,550. Patented Sept. 26, 1893.
-M l M' f UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MALVERN IV, ILES, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
T U Y E R E SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,550, dated September 26, 1893. Application inea August 27, 1892. sem-a1 No. 444.300. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MALVERN W. ILES, of Denver, county of Arapahoe, State of Colorado, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tuyeres, of which the following is a true and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to tuyeres and has for its object to provide improved means for securing them in place on the water jackets of the furnaces with which they are used.
The nature of my invention will be best understood as described in connection with the drawings, in which it is illustrated in what I believe to be its best form, and in which Figure I isan elevation showing mydevice in central longitudinal section; Fig. 2 a face view ot' the water jacket and its attachments, and Fig. 3 a section on the line I--2 of Fig. I.
I form the water jacket with an air passage B extending `through it and forming what may be called the point or mouth of thel tuyere, a face O being formed at the outer rim of the perforation orair'mpassageB. On each side of the air passage I secure to the water jacket the ends of a link E, preferably as shown, forming lugs DD in which the ends of link E are pivoted. H is the tuyere, the end of which, is facedv as shown at I to fit and form a joint with the face C. I prefer to make this a ball and socket joint and so show it, the face O being hollow ground and the face I made in ball or spherical form. At a point on the back of the tuyere opposite to the face I, and tothe joint I C when the tuyere is in place, I provide a lug J; the link E being adapted to extend across this lug as shown in full lines in Fig. 1.
The parts being constructed as above described it obviously is only necessary, in order to secure the tuyere Iirmly in place to provide means for exerting pressure between the lug J and the end of link E, and this I effect by providing a device in the nature of a wedge which can be moved to exert the necessary pressure. An ordinary tapered wedge, a screw, or a cam will all act in the same way, and I have illustrated as most convenient `a cam G pivoted on link E so as to come oppo site to lug J and preferably fit in a hollow seat K formed therein, said cam being formed on or attached to the end of a lever F. The tuyere as shown is formed with an opening L at its bottom, said opening being closed bya combustible or fusible plate M; it is provided with a sight hole N closed by a lid O, and is secured by a row of rivets Q to a sheet iron extension I. With the exception of the means for securing the tuyere to the jacket, the devices illustrated are the same described and shown in my application for a patent, filed June 6, 1892, Serial No. 435,595, and so far as they are new they are claimed therein.
The operation of the device is practically obvious, the tuyere H is put in position so that its face I will register with the face O of thejair passage B, the link E, if hinged, is then swung up so as to extend over lug J; Vif not hinged. It is arranged to normally be in that position. The wedge clamping device is then actuated so as to exert pressure between lug J and link E, as by turning up lever F, and the tuyere is thus firmly held in position and a tight joint secured between'it and the jacket. As is clearly apparent the tuyere can be removed and replaced with the utmost ease andrapidity.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with a Water jacket having an air passage B formed through it, and a beveled face C on the outer rim of said passage, lugs secured to the water jacket on` either side of the air passage B, a link pivoted in said lugs, and a lever F with a cam shaped head G pivoted on said link, of a tuyere having a face I and adapted to register and form a jointv with the face O, and a shoulder J arranged opposite to the face I, whereby when the link E is swung around across the shoulder J the faceI of the tuyere may be firmly held against the face O on the outer wall of the water jacket.
2. The combination with a water `jacket having an air passage B formed through it, and a beveled face C on the outer rim of said passage, lugs cast integral with the water rco jacket on either side of the air passagerB, a der J the face I 0f the tuyere may be rmly link formed of asingle barbent V Shaped pivheld against the face C on the outer wall of Io oted in said lugs, and a lever F with a cam the Waterjacket. shaped head G pivoted on said link, of a tuyere 5 having a face I and adapted to register and form a joint with the face O and a shoulder J Witnesses: arranged opposite to the face I whereby when PHILIP SIMMERT, the link E is swung around across the shoul- J NO.
