JAMES D. FOSTER, OF IRONTON, AND CHARLES A. HAMMEL, OF FINDLAY,
' OHIO.
OIL-STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,244, dated September 19, 1893.
Application iiled June 5, 1893. Serial No. 476,596- (No model.)
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES D. FOSTER, of Ironton, in the county of Lawrence, and CHARLES A. HAMMEL, of Findlay, in the county of Hancock, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Stoves;V and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in oil burning cook-stoves, and its object is to provide a novel construction of the same which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efficiency and economy.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure l. is a cross sectional view of a portion of a cook stove showin g my improvement applied thereto. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are detail views of parts of the burner detached. Fig. 5. is an enlarged cross section of my device.
In the said drawings the reference numeral 1 designates a rectangular plate adapted to be inserted in the fire boX or pot of the stove, and be supported in said lire box or pot, similar to an ordinary grate. This plate is recessed or hollowed on its upper side forming an oil receptacle, and at its center is provided with a feed or supply pipe 2, leading to an oil tank or reservoir. Near its rear edge the plate is formed with a series of holes 3, the walls of which are cut away in front forming channels 4c. These holes communicate with the ash-pit 5. Near thefront edge the plate is formed with a series of holes 6.
The numeral 7 designates a rectangular plate forming a cover and extends from the rear edge to near the front of the oil receptacle, and is confined in place by lugs 8 on plate 1, which engage with slots 9 in the sides thereof. This cover closes the tops of holes 3 so that air is admitted to the oil receptacle through the channels 4..
Located in front of the cover a slight distance therefrom to form a mixing space, is a movable strip l0, formed on its under side with a series of beveled recesses l2. This strip rests on the plate l. and is confined in place by lugs 13, secured thereto.
The operation is as follows: Oil is admitted to the oil reservoir through pipe 2, and ignited therein, sufficient air for the combustion being admitted from the ash pit through the holes 3, and channels 4. The llames from the oil will pass to the opening between cover 7 and strip 10, Where meeting currents of air entering through holes 6 and recesses 12. they will combine therewith and pass up into the combustion, and au intense heat be produced. The temperature of the stove can be regulated by means of the movable strip. By moving this strip laterally more or less air is admitted to the oil receptacle acting as a valve'.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim isl. An oil burner for a cook stove consisting of the plate, recessed on its upper side forming an oil receptacle, and having holes at its rear and front portions, the cover and strip with an intervening space, and the feed or supply pipe, substantially as described.
2. In a cook stove, the combination with the lire-box and ash pit, of the rectangular, plate recessed on its upper side, forming an oil receptacle, and having holes and channels atk its rear edge, and holes at its front edge, the cover, the movable strip having beveled recesses on its under side, and the supply pipe, substantially as described.
3. In a cook stove, the combination with the fire box and ash pit, of the rectangular plate recessed on its upper surface to form an oil receptacle, and having holes and channels at y its rear edge and holes at its front edge, the lugs on said plate, the movable strip having beveled recesses on its under side, the cover having slots at its sides, and the supply pipe, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
