SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,213, dated September 19, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

, Be it known that I, JAMES R. BARRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for 1Idoxes, of which the following is a specificalOIl.

My invention relates to improvements in detachable covers for boxes or other receptacles which covers are adapted to be applied and secured to original boxes containing articles of merchandise, for the purpose of ex= posing the articles to View and. at the same time protecting them from dust and moisture in the atmosphere and also to render it easy and convenient for removing the articles therefrom.

To this end my invention consists in the several novel features of construction and operation and combination of parts, the details of which will be fully described and specifically set forth in the claim hereunto annexed.

It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a front face view of the cover detached showing one of the corners in vertical section, to illustrate the means of securing one of the removable ends of the frame. Fig. 2, is a horizontal cross section on line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a vertical transverse section on line 0a 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 4, is a view of the box provided with my detachable cover, showing one of the sliding plates moved back for the purpose of inserting the hand within the box. Fig. 5, is a view of the sliding plate, detached, showing a preferred form of its construction.

A, is the frame constructed in any form desired to inclose the face of the box or receptacle to be inclosed, having one of its ends aadapted to be removablysecured there in, as shown in Fig. 1. I have found, however, that an easy, convenient and cheap method of securing this detachable piece of Serial No. 467.154. (No model.)

the frame, is by a dowel pin b, passing diagonally through the corner of the frame, as shown.

B, is a dividing strip connecting the ends of the frame preferably centrally, or may be secured at any point desired.

0, is a pane of glass or any other transparent material, which is preferably permanently secured in the lower portion of the frame; and the upper portion of the frame is provided with a fixed pane D- and a sliding and removable pane E. The fixed pane D may occupy one-half or any other proportion of the space desired, and the removable pane -E- to be of sufficient size to fill the remaining portion of the frame. The pane D- is preferably secured within the frame, just out of line with the pane E, so that the pane E- may travel backward and forward in grooves in the inner edge of the frame and dividing strip B-. It will also be observed that when from any cause one of the panes becomes broken, new ones may be readily inserted by removing the dowel pins --b and taking off the end a of the frame.

Inasmuch as the pane '-E- which is adapted to be moved to and fro in its trackway, is liable to meet with more or less handling and liable to be broken, I secure it Within a frame dpreferably constructed of any ordinary Wire, of a size a little larger than the thickness of the glass. It may be readily secured therein by soldering small strips across its corners, as shown at e-. This wire case thus affordsa very easy and convenient means for pushing the pane to and fro. i

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The herein described detachable cover comprising a frame having one of its ends adapted to be removed for the purpose of inserting new panes within the cover, a longitudinal central division piece provided with a groove to receive the stationary pane of glass, the upper parts of said cover and dimy invention I have signed my name, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
