I H. ROTH. I DEVICE FOR SUPPORTING LIGHTING FIXTURES.
Patented Sept. 19, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN ROTH, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
DEVICE FOR SUPPORTING LIGHTING-FIXTURES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,129, dated September 19, 1893.
Application filed December 2'7, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN ROTH, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Devices for Supporting Gas Fixtures and Electric Light Wires, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part ofthis specification.
In erecting buildings in which gas or elec-- tricity is to be used for lighting, the fixtures commonly include pipes, severally terminating in a vertical portion projecting from above through the ceiling centrally of the room, for attaching a chandelier thereto. The present method of centering and supporting the terminals of these pipe fixtures, is crude, unreliable and unsatisfactory.
The object of my invention is to provide a device for supporting the fixtures of the pipe in such manner that it can before the ceiling is put in be readily centered with reference to the room.
The device is inexpensive of construction and is so arranged as to be readily adjustable for the purpose of centering the pipe.
The device is adapted for attaching gas burners and for supporting electric light wires.
In the drawings, Figure 1, is an elevation ofmy improved device, a part being broken away to show interior construction, in connection with a fragment of a ceiling and of joists with which it is used, on line 1-1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2, is a top plan view of the device.
The joists A A and the ceiling B consisting of lath secured to the joists and of plaster adherent to the lath, are such as are in common use in most buildings of modern construction.
The pipe 0 is located above the ceiling B and below a floor (if any) laid on the joists A A. This pipe is provided with a vertically arranged terminal portion 0 which extends through the ceilingB and projects an inch or more into the room below at the center or other predetermined position for attaching a chandelier thereto.
For permanently supporting this pipe and particularly to provide means for adjusting the pipe centrally of the room or in the other predetermined position, I provide a bracket Serial No. 456,323. (No model.)
D substantially as long as the distance between the joists A A, which bracket has verroom in the direction of the joists, and as will be noted are elongated in the same direction so that in putting in the fixture the bracket can be adjusted readily in the recesses in the direction of the joists so as accurately to,lo-'
cate it at the centerof the room. The bracket is secured in place to the joists by the screws H H.
The bracket is provided with an elongated slot I and a block K provided with a foot K rests movably on the bracket. The vertical portion 0 of the gas pipe passes through and is fixed in the block K near that extremity of the block which is opposite to the projecting foot K. This pipe (3' extends movable in the slot I, through the bracket D The block K is secured adjustably to the bracket D by the bolt L, which passes through the slot I and through a suitable aperture therefor in the foot of the block. The block K may be adjusted to any position in the whole length of the bracket, the block terminating abruptly at one end near the pipe 0 so that it may be moved close to the arm E at that side of the block, and if it is desired to move the block and pipe 0' close to the other leg E the block may be reversed in position so that its foot K will project in the reverse direction and the pipe 0' may then be moved near to the other arm E by adjusting the block close to the arm.
It is more common to bring the pipe to its vertical terminal portion between the joists and substantially parallel thereto as indicated by the fragment of pipe but the pipe can be brought to its terminal vertical portion from beyond an adjoining joistin the manner shown by the pipe 0. In this latter case a channel or recess is cut in the joist for the pipe, and the flanges F F and the arms E E are for this purpose preferably furcated or provided with a suitable recess for the pipe. There is sufficient elasticityin the pipe to permit of the adjustment of the block K along the bracket D to such extent as is necessary to properly center the vertical portion of the pipe.
In connection with the device above described and asapart thereof I provide means for supporting electric light wires, which by the construction of the device as heretofore described may also be properly centered with reference to a room. For this purpose a plate or collar M is secured to the vertical pipe 0 a little above the ceiling B which collar is provided with apertures having pipe bush ings N N. In use insulated wires 0 0 surrounded by rubber packing P are passed through these apertures and are secured therein to the collar, conveniently by wedging the packing P tightly around the wire and against the bushing N. The electric wires thus supported are extended through the ceiling and in suitable bushings therefor, but which, as they form no part of my invention, are not shown herewith.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A device for supporting lighting fixtures comprising a bracket adapted to rest on adjoining joists, and a block secured to a section of pipe which block is adjustable on the bracket horizontally, substantially as described.
2. In a device for supporting lighting fixtures, a bracket consisting of a horizontally disposed member having an elongated slot,
suspending arms and horizontally projecting flanges, combined with a block adjustable on the bracket horizontally and secured rigidly to a section of pipe, said pipe passing movably through the bracket in the slot therefor, substantially as described.
3. In a device for supporting lighting fixtures, a bracket adapted to be supported on adjoining joists, said bracket having a horizontally disposed member provided with an elongated slot, in combination with a block terminating abruptly at one end, a section of gas pipe fixed in the block near its abrupt extremity and passing movably through the slot in the bracket, and means for securing the block adj ustably to the bracket, substantially as described.
4. In a device for supporting lighting fixtures, a bracket adapted to be supported on adjoining joists, said bracket having a horizontally disposed member provided with an elongated slot, a block adjustable on the bracket, a pipe fixed in the block and adjustable therewith, and a collar secured to and supported on the pipe which collar is adapted to receive and support wires therein for electric lighting, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERMAN ROTH.
