T. TUCKER. PACKING BOX LID.
\ N0.5o5,o12. Patentedwsept. 12,1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS TUCKER, or SERENo, MISSOURI.
PACKING-BOX LID.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,012, dated September 12, 1893.
Application iiled May 16, 1893. Serial No. 474.383. (No model.)
. to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in packing boxes.
The invention will iirst be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings-Figure l is a'perspective View of a box embodying my invention, with the lid partly raised. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, the lid being shown in full lines as closed, and in dotted lines as opened. Fig. 3 isa detail transverse sectional View through the center of the lid-locking device. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the same showing the parts separated. Fig. 5 illustrates one modification of my improved lock-- ing device. I I,
Referring to the drawings, A 1s the box constructed in the ordinary manner, and Bis the lid.
C are disks having central axial bolt-holes 1 and quadrantal recesses 2 and 3 in opposite quadrants at right angles to the axis of the disk. The disks C are attached one to each end of the box A, preferably near its center, by means of screws, bolts or nails. In the bolt-hole of each disk is inserted a bolt D, having a transverse slot or opening 4, and a threaded end 5, the latter projecting outside the disk and provided with a thumb-nut E.
F are rods provided at their upper ends with transverse straps G, which are preferably riveted to the rods, the' straps being screwed or otherwise fastened to the upper surface of the lid B, and the rods passing through holes in the lids, the latter being extended at each end beyond lthe box so that the rods F may come outside the box, one at each end. The rods F are passed through the quadrantal recesses in the disks, and also through the transverse slots or openings 4 in the bolts. It is plain that When the thumb-screws E are screwed up they will draw their respective bolts outward, and clamp the rods against the Vand out of the Way when in the open position.
If it is desired to use a box, having myimproved device, as a shipping box, it becomes advisable to provide means for locking the thumb-nut so that. it cannot be turned by unauthorized persons. For this purpose the thumb-nuts may be each provided with ahasp H, hinged to the thumb-nut at 6 and slotted at 7, which hasp is arranged to shut down over a staple I secured to the box, a Suitable padlock being inserted in the staple.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a box, of a disk secured to each end of the box, each disk provided with a central bolt-hole and a series of quadrantal recesses, a bolt inserted in each bolt-hole and provided with a transverse opening, a box lid, a rod secured to each end of the box lid and inserted through the quadrantal recesses and through the opening in the bolt and a nut threaded onto each bolt, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a box, and a boxlid, of a locking device for each end of the box, each locking device comprising a recessed disk having a central bolt. hole and secured to the end of the box, a slotted bolt in the bolt-hole, a rod attached to the end ot` the box-lid and inserted through the recess in the disk and through the slot in the bolt, a nut on the bolt, a hasp hinged to the nut, and a staple in the box over which the hasp fits, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOS. TUCKER.
