BILLIARD-CUSHION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,007, dated September 12, 1893.
Application led December 29, 1892. Sem'al No. 456.676. (No model.)
Z'o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES SCHULEN- BURG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and usefull Improvements in Billiard- Cushions; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
This invention relates to improvements in cushions for billiard tables; the object of the same being to provide a cushion which will possess the proper amount of elasticity and is stiffened so as not to be impaired by the ball striking the same. y
The invention consists in providing a cushion with a metallic strip located between the part of the cushion against which the ball strikes and the rail, said strip being placed so that it can give with the cushion and at the same time assist in holding it in place.`
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a sectional view of a cushion for a ,billiard table,
made in accordance with my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a detail view of a part of the cushion.
A designates the cushion rail, B the cushion, and C the cloth which is stretched partially around the cushion and cushion rail. The cushion B is made up of a single piece of rubber, which has near its front edge, and embedded therein, a hemp string or cord a, which extends parallel with the front edge of the cushion. From this cord extends parallelV with the front inclined side of the cushion a strip of fabric b, said fabric, as well as the string, being molded in the rubber cushion. The rear side of the cushion is provided with a strip or strips of fabric, c, which is vulcanized to the cushion to provide a better surface for the adhesive substance to adhere to which is used to connect the cushion to the rail. At or near the center of the cushion and on a horizontal line with -the edge against which the ball strikes is embedded a dat metal strip, D, said strip being preferably a band of spring steel. The strip D is so positioned 1n the cushionthat its flat sides will be parallel with the rear inclined edge ofthe cushion, as the strain or tension upon this strip is chiefly in the direction of the inner edge of the cushion and downwardly and inwardly from the top edge thereof.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide a billiard cushion with an elastic coil, which extends parallel with the edge of the cushion, through which a wire is passed to add to the resistance of the cushion. Also that it has been proposed to provide a billiard table with a composite cushion having a spring or metal ribbon interposed or placed between the elastic parts of the cushion, said parts having different degrees of elasticity, and I do not claim such as my invention; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a billiard cushion, constructed substantially asu shown, the parts thereof being formed integral with each other, of a Iiat metal strip embedded in the cushion at or near its center and on a horizontal line with the edge of the cushion against which the ball strikes, said strip being inclined so that the greatest width of the strip will be at an inclination with the front edge of the cushion, and parallel with the rear face of the cushion substantially as shown.
2. In combination with a billiard cushion, the parts comprising the same being molded together and including a fiat metal-strip embedded in the rubber so that the greatest width of the metal strip will be parallel with the` rear face of the cushion, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
