SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,941, dated September 12, 1893.

Application filed March 14, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES G. REGNSTROM, of Ishpeming, in the county of Marquette and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Sleigh, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention, is to provide a new and improved sleigh, which is simple and durable in construction, and more especially designed for coasting purposes.

The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same.

The improved sleigh is provided with a frame A having the runners B, B, turned up in front and connected at this end by a cross bar C, as is plainly shown in the drawings. The runners B, B, are also connected with each other near the middle by a cross bar D, in the rear of which are erected posts E, supporting the seat F, provided with front legs G, extending upward from the runners and reaching a suitable distance above the seat F to form an arm restfor the same. The upper ends of the arm rests are attached to the posts E, as shown.

The seat F is provided with a suitableback rest F.

Braces H extend from the runners to the poststo securely hold the same in place. The posts are connected witheach other by a cross bar E', on which rests the inner end of the seat F, and this cross bar E is connected by braces E2 with the front cross bar (l, and side braces E3 connect the cross bar E with the posts E, see Fig. 3. Thus it will be seen that the posts E and seat F are strengthened so as to prevent displacement of the respective parts, it being understood that the cross bar D located in front of the seat F forms a foot rest for the person occupying the seat. The posts E are extended a suitable distance above the seat F, and the upper ends of the said posts are connected with each other by a handle bar J, formed with handles J adapted to be taken hold of by the operator standing on the foot rests I. Now, it will be seen that when the seat F is occupied and a person stands on the foot rests I, `the load is near the middle of the runners.

In order to propel the sleigh the operator standing on the foot rests I, takes hold of the handles J of the handle bar J, and then lifts one foot od the foot rest and presses on the snow between the two foot rests, and then gives a push to the sleigh so as to impart a forward motion to the same, the operator lifting his foot back to the foot rest as soon as the sleigh darts forward.

The operation is repeated so that considerable speed can be obtained, it being, however, understood that the operator can direct or start the sleigh whenever desired, by pressing on either of the handles J', J, to turn the front part of the sleigh in the proper di-- rection.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A sleigh comprising the parallel runners B B, a cross rod C connecting the forward ends of the runners, a cross piece D also connecting the runners between their ends the standards E extending up from the middle of the runners and connected at their upper ends by cross bar J having handles J at its ends, a seat F secured to the standards a back rest F, front legs G extending up from the runners, secured to the sides of the seat and bent back at their upper ends and secured to the standards to form arms for the seats, braces H side braces E3 longitudinal braces E2 extending forwardly from a cross bar E to the 'od l? and the foot rests I, substantially as set ort , OHAS.
