SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,840, dated September 12, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ADAM C. KRICK, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Traveling-Bags, Satchels, dac.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

T he present invention relates to traveling bags, satchels, dsc., and consists, first, in the construction and method of securing within the bag, a toilet or sample case; secondly, of such toilet or sample case detachably arranged within the bag; thirdly, of the irnproved form of bag trame, whereby the bag or satchel is adapted to receive the toilet or sample case, and lastly, of securing to the lower ends of the bag frame where they are jointed or pivoted together, a device for protecting said parts of the frame and also for more firmly securing the parts of the frame together. The invention is therefore designed to provide a strong and durable bag-frame, and nally a bag or satchel having a detachably arranged toilet case within the bag, which at the wish of the owner, can be quickly removed, when not desired to be put into use.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying three sheets of drawings, in which I have employed similar letters of reference in each of the several views, to indicate corresponding parts.

In said drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a traveling bag embodying my invention, clearly illustrating the arrangement of the detachable toilet or sample case within the bag. Fig. 2 is a plan oi' the bag when open, with the toilet case closed, and Fig. 3 is a like view of the bag, with the toilet or sample case opened. Fig. e is a plan of the bag, when opened, with the toilet case removed, showing an arrangement of swivel keys to which the toilet case can be secured by means of slotted plates. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the toilet or sample case when removed from the interior of the bag, clearly illustrating an arrangement of tlaps or strips provided with said above mentioned slotted plates for securing said toilet case by means of said swivels in position within the bag. Fig. 6 is an end view of the bag when closed. Fig. 7 is a vertical cross-section of the bag and its toilet case in position, and Fig. 8 is a similar view of the bag, with the toilet case removed, clearly illustrating the workings of the frame of the bag when the latter is opened. Fig. 9 is a top view or plan of the bag-frame. Fig. l0 is a perspective view of a swivel post or key employed in my improved form of bag, and Fig. ll is a perspective view of the slotted plate employed.

The bag A and its trame A on which my improvement is intended to be used are shown in the drawings and consist of the end pieces a and a provided on their opposite ends with suitable loops or eyes a2 to which are pivoted or jointed the frame-sections a3 and a4, as will be clearly seen from Fig. 9. To the end pieces a and a are secured by means of pins or rivets h', the tips or end tips b, which are L-shaped in cross-section and form a suitable shoe at each end of the jointed or pivoted frame-sections, and which act as protectors against the tearing apart in consequence of the rough handling to which they are subj ected on cars and in baggage rooms, and also in a great degree protecting the bag frame at the point desired and also making a strong frame at the joint.

Extending longitudinally through the bottom of the bag are two rods or bars a5 and a6,

see Figs. 7, 8 and 9, which are designed to strengthen the frame, and also extend th rough the lower ends of the frame-sections and form the pins on which said frame sections turn and by which they are pivotally secured to the loops or eyes a2 on said end pieces a and a. This frame is covered in the usual manner with leather and lining thereby forming the bag illustrated more particularly in Figs. 6, 7 and 8.

As will be noticed from Fig. 8, the bag frame being of the peculiar form of construction as just described, when the bag is opened, a raised portion A2, will be the result, which for convenience l will call the base of the bag. As will beseen from Fig. 4t, l have arranged on said base A2, at its opposite ends the swivel- TOO posts or keys c and c', while on the opposite sides of said base and extending out therefrom, as shown, I have arranged a set of swivel posts or keys d and d. lVithin said bag A and upon said swivel posts or keys d and d', I have removably arranged a sample or toilet case E, which, as will be seen from Figs. l, 5 and '7, comprises therein two pocketshaped partitions or compartments e4 and e5, which are pivotally connected or hinged t0 one another at the bottom to form a complete bag. At their upper edges, said partitions may be provided with any suitable form of locking means e for retaining said bag-portions e4 and e5 in their closed relation to one another.

My improved form of sample or toilet case E, which forms a suitable partition within the bag, also forms an additional bag or receptaclev into which may be placed wearing apparel, such as linen shirts, to prevent them from becoming soiled and to prevent the starched bosoms of the shirts from becoming broken, as is often the case in bags, as now made. The bottom of this additional bag or case must be of the same Vwidth as the base A2 and is provided at its opposite ends with the flaps or strips e and e respectively, provided with the slotted plates fand on the opposite sides of said toilet case, are the longitudinal iiaps e2 and e3, provided with the slotted plates f. Said plates, which are preferably of the construction illustrated in Fig. l1 are secured to said flaps by means of their iiangesf2 between which the leather of the flaps is secured, or they may be fastened to said flaps by means of rivets or pins, or in any other well-known manner. In order to secure said toilet or sample case E, in position within the bag A, it is placed on the base A2. The slotted plates f on the flaps e and e are passed over the swivel-posts or keys c and c which are turned in holding engagement with said plates f whereby the toilet case is securely held in place within the bag. Of course, it will be evident, that any desirable number of such swivel posts or slotted plates may be used, but the toilet ease may be fastened in any other convenient manner, as for instance, by means of hooks and eyes, or by staples and pins. The advantage in this form of bag is, that in case the owner of the bag does not wish to use the toilet or sample case, it can be removed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A bag frame, comprising therein, thevend pieces a and a', frame-sections hinged or jointed thereto, rods or bars a5 and a6 connecting said hinged or jointed parts of the frame, and plates b secured to said end pieces a and a', substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a bag or the like, the combination, with the frame thereof, of a sample or toilet case, comprising therein two pocket-shaped partitions pivotally connected at their bottoms, to form an additional bag, having iiaps at their sides, and means for detachably securing said toilet case to said frame, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. In a bag or the like, the combination, with the frame thereof, of a sample or toilet case, comprising therein two pocket-shaped partitions pivotally connected at their bottoms, to form an additional bag, having flaps at their sides, slotted plates on said flaps, and swivel posts or keys on ysaid frame, adapted to be engaged and locked with said slotted plates, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. In a bag or the like, the combination, with the frame thereof, comprising therein, the end pieces a and a', frame-sections hinged or jointed thereto, and plates b secured to said end pieces a and a', of a sample or toilet case, comprising therein two pocket-shaped partitions pivotally connected at their bottoms, to form an additional bag, provided with iiaps forming hinge-pieces, and means for detachably securing said parts to said frame, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

6. In a bag or the like, the combination, with the frame thereof, comprising therein, the end pieces a and a', frame sections hinged or jointed thereto, rods or bars a5 and a connecting said hinged or jointed parts of the frame, and plates h secured to said end pieces a and a', of a sample or toilet case, comprising therein two pocket-shaped partitions pivotally connected at their bottoms, to form an additional bag, provided with iiaps forming hinge-pieces, and means for detachably securing said parts to said frame, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

7. In a bag or the like, the combination, with the frame thereof, comprising therein the end pieces a and a', frame sections hinged or jointed thereto, rods or bars a5 and a6 connecting said hinged or'jointed portions of the frame, and swivel posts or keys d and CZ', of a sample or toilet case, comprising therein two pocket-shaped partitions pivotally connected at their bottoms, to form an additional bag, provided with naps e2 and e3 forming hingepieces, and slotted plates f on said flaps, with which said swivel posts or keys CZ and d are adapted to engage and lock, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
