MACHINE FOR MAKING SPINNING OR OTHER ROLLERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,813, dated September 12, 1893.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANQOIS FERDINAND MOLIE, of the city of Paris, France, have invented Improvements in Machinery to be used in the Manufacture of Spinning and other Rollers, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in France for fifteen years, dated August 21, 1891, No. 215,653; in Germany for fifteen years, dated January 27, 1892, No. 04,174, and in Austria-Hungary for fifteen years, dated May 31, 1892, No. 5,973 and No. 19,322,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The machine constituting the subject of the present application relates to machines to be used in the manufacture of various classes of rollers employed in industry, such as drawing rollers, rolling rollers, printing rollers, &c., whatever may be their shape and dimensions, but this arrangement of machine is applicable more particularly to the manufacture of drawing rollers employed in spinning mills. To produce the said rollers I wind on their bodies, which are previously coated with a cement made of glue or other similar material and of bichromate of potash, a certain thickness of carded cotton or of other fibrous material, which thickness or coating is afterward calendered, then covered with the said cement or composition with which the body of the roller was previously covered. To obtain this resultI employ the machine which forms the subject matter of the present in vention, and which will be understood by the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical section through the center of the driving shaft. Fig. 2 is a plan and Fig. 3 is a transverse section.
As represented in the drawings, the roller to be covered is placed between the two heads A and B. It is connected to the spindle of the driving head A by a mandrel a provided with a chuck which grips one end while the other may turn freely in the socket h of the other head. This being done I cover the surface of this roller with the cement above described in the manner hereinafter described. The cotton is then wound upon the roller, the first turn being accomplished by hand; after it has been completely covered with cotton,
this latter is highly compressed by means of cylinders or rollers G G. The pressure of the cylinders or rollers G G is given by means of connecting rods H H, levers I I, links J, lever K, link L and the pedal M. The cotton being well felted or compressed, the cylinders G G are moved out of contact and the surface is again covered with the said cement. For this purpose the leversN carry at their ends the reservoir 0 which is hung upon two small links P and is loosely mounted so that the reservoir may maintain its vertical position notwithstanding the partial rotary motion of the levers N. The levers N being drawn back above the vessel containing the cement, the little reservoir is plunged into the cement'so as to fill it and if the levers N are loosened or let go, they will be raised by the action of a spring Q carried thereon in such a way that the reservoir 0 is held above the cement which allows the excess of material to drain away. The reservoir is then brought over the cylinder to be cemented by making a half turn of the levers N and the reservoir is emptied upon the cylinder by means of a little handle R. A stop S upon which the spring abuts, holds the leversN at a proper angle. The roller is then removed and dried after which it is placed in the machine where it is again made round and smooth by great pressure by means of the cylinders G G.
I claim- 1. In a machine for making rollers the combination of the headsA 13 adapted to support the roller, combined compressing and coating cylinders G G placed opposite to each other and means for forcing the same in contact with the roller by positive pressure substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. In machines for the manufacture of spinnin g and other rollers, the combination of two heads A and B centering and adapted to hold between them the roller during the winding of the cotton or other fibrous material thereon, a pair of cylinders or rollers G G for the purpose of compressing the cotton or other fibrous material wound upon the roller in course of manufacture and to distribute thereon a layer of cement, a pedal M, links L, lever K, rod J and links I I and H H for operating the cylinders or rollers G G and a cement distributer formed of a reservoir 0 supported by two small links P hanging from two levers N, which allow this reservoir to be moved to take a supply of cement from a vessel and to convey it to the roller to be coated, the whole being formed, arranged and combined substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In machines for the manufacture of spin ning and other rollers, the combination of two heads A and B adapted to support and rotate the roller being manufactured, a pair of pressing and cement distributing cylinders or rollers G G, means for forcing such rollers toward each other, a cement distributing reser- Voir O, and means for carrying and moving such reservoir to above and away from the roller being manufactured and to and from the cement tank, all substantially as herein shown and described.
The foregoing specification of my improvements in machinery to be used in the manufacture of spinning and other rollers signed by me this 30th day of March, 1893.
