Be it known that I, GEORGE RNVARD, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulp-Molding Machines, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
My invention relates to a machine for forming articles from a suitable pulp. preferably I0 wood-pulp; and my object is to provide a machine which shall be simple, accurate, and speedy. in its action.
My invention will be defined in the claims.
In the drawings showing the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 a central vertical section of Fig. l.
In carrying` out my invention I have provided a rotating carrier which preferably rotates on a horizontal axis, the carrier having thereon, preferably, a succession of perforated mold-faces, the general plane of a mold-face being substantially perpendicular to the plane in which said carrier rotates. I have also provided a means for depositing pulp on such mold-face, preferably by causing it to dip into a vat of pulp and applying suction through said face when immersed. In order to compress the layer of pulp deposited on the mold-face, I prefer to use a second mold-face adapted to reciprocate toward and away from the iirst face and suitable actuating means adapted to press said second face against said lirst face in a direction toward the axis of the carrier. In the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings the mold-faces are situated in pairs, one face of each pair being fixed to the carrier and the other face, which copcrates therewith, reciprocating' toward and away from it and also traveling with the carrier. Thus each pair of faces forms a mold which travels.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, I is the mold-face carrier, which rotates on a horizontal axis, in this case being mounted upon a horizontal shaft 2, supported in suitable bearings, as shown, and turned by a gear-wheel l2. As the axis of rotation is horizontal, the plane of rotation of the carrier is vertical. The carrier and 5o shaft may be hollow, as shown, if desired. 4' is a diaphragm forming a division through the carrier. On the carrier is located a perforated mold-face 3, whose general plane is perpendicular to the plane of rotation of the carrier. I prefer to provide a succession of mold-faces on the carrier and have shown another similar one, 4, thereon, the two said faces forming a succession of faces. These faces are preferably convex. In order to de- 6o posit a layer of pulp on each of said faces, I prefer to provide a suitable vat 6, containing pulp, as shown, of a height so that said faces will dip into and rise from the same in succession. As part of the means for depositing the pulp on the face 4 I have in the drawings provided a hollow tube 10, communicating with the hollow part of the carrier, over which face 4 is located, within which suction and compression may be exerted by any suit- 7o able means, as indicated by the arrows. Illustration of such a device is not necessary to those skilled in the art in order to understand my invention. As the face 4 rotates downward and passes into the pulp suction may be applied, as shown by the right-hand arrowhead, and cause a layer of pulp to be deposited thereon. In order to lirmly compress the layer of pulp upon the face sufliciently to squeeze out water from the pulp and partially 8o or completely form the article, I have provided a second mold-face, which is adapted to move toward and away from said face 4, and suitable means for positively pressing the former face against the layer of pulp on face 4. This movable face 4u is in the embodimentof my invention shown in the drawings supported on the carrier by means of slide-rods 5 thereon. As the carrier rotates in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1 face 4u 9o will strike against cam 7, which will cause said face 4 to move and will press it firmly against face 4, compressing the pulp on said face and forming the article. It will be observed that the cam 7 exerts a pressure in a 95 direction substantially perpendicular to the axis of the carrier uin this case toward or transversely of said axis. This is of advantage, for when the carrier is mounted on a rotating shaft perpendicular to the plane of rotation of the carrier the pressure is eX- erted on it, which is a mechanical advantage. In the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings this pressure is exerted while both faces 4 and 4 are traveling and in contact with the layer of pulp, and I prefer to do this in some cases, as the rotation then does not have to be stopped. It will be observed that the face 4a and the cam 7 together constitute a reciprocating means for compressing the layer of pulp. The carrier and cam also constitute an actuating device or actuator for carrying face 4 into the pulp and then relatively against face 4, although in this case face 4a moves toward face 4. A hollow pipe connects mold-face 4 with hollow' shaft 2, by which suction and compression may be applied to face 4a, as indicated by the arrows. Another mold-face 3u, similar to face 4, may also be provided and attached to the slides 5, so that when one mold closes the other one opens, as shown, and face 3 may also have a pipe 8 connecting with the left side of shaft 2, by which suction and compression may be applied to it, as indicated by the arrows. A pipe 1l connects with.moldface 3, and suction and compression are indicated by arrows. When a mold opens, air may be forced into the carrier and through a face (such as 3) to loosen the article, if desired. It is not material to my invention how the article is removed from the mold-face.
I am aware that many variations from the constructions heretofore described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not limit myself to the embodiment herein disclosed.
What I claim is- 1. In a machine for forming articles from pulp in combination, a plurality of traveling molds, each of the same being composed of mold-faces adapted to form an article between them, one of the faces of each mold being movable toward and away from the other face, means to supply suitable pulp to said molds, means to press the faces of said molds together to form the article, and a connection between a movable face in each mold to open one mold as the other mold closes.
2. In a machine for forming articles from pulp in combination, a shaft, a rotating carrier thereon bearing a plurality of mold-faces adapted to form an article between them, means to supply suitable pulp to said mold, and means to apply pressure toward said shaft to one of said faces to press said faces together and form said article.
3. In a machine for forming articles from pulp in combination, a shaft, a rotating carrier thereon bearing a plurality of mold-faces adapted to form an article between them, means to supply suitable pulp to said mold,
and means to apply pressure toward said shaft to one of said faces to press said faces together at a point farther on in the travel of said carrier to form saidaarticle.
4. In a machine for forming articles from pulp in combination, a vertically-rotating carrier bearing a plurality of molds, each of said molds having a relatively stationary moldface and a relatively movable face nesting therewith, said relatively movable faces being connected together whereby one mold opens as the other closes, a pulp-vat into which said molds dip to receive a layer of pulp between the faces thereof, and means located farther on in the rotation of said molds to successively press the faces of each mold together to form the article.
5. In 'a machine for forming articles from pulp in combination, a vertically-rotating carrier bearing a plurality of molds, each of said molds having a relatively stationary mold-face and a relatively movable face nesting therewith, said relatively movable faces being connected together whereby one mold opens as the other closes, means to supply a layer of pulp between the faces thereof, and means located farther on in the rotation of said molds 'to successively press the faces of each mold together to form the article.
6. In a machine for forming articles from pulp in combination, a shaft, a carrier thereon bearing a plurality of molds, each of said molds being composed of a pair of perforated nesting mold-faces movable relatively toward each other, said movable faces being connected whereby one mold opens as the other closes, a pulp-vat into which said molds dip to receive a layer of pulp, a cam to successively press said molds together, at a point farther on in the rotation of said carrier, to form said article.
7. In a machine for forming articles from pulp in combination, a rotating shaft., means to rotate the same, a mold carried on said shaft and having a plurality of nesting moldfaces connected with said shaft and including a perforated mold-face, and a connection between said perforated mold-face and said shaft whereby adraft of air may be passed through the same.
8. In a machine for forming articles from pulp in combination, a rotating shaft, means to rotate the same, a mold carried on said shaft and having a perforated mold-face, and a connection between said perforated moldface and said shaft whereby a draft of air may be passed th rough the same in either direction.

In a machine for forming articles from pulp in combination, a rotating shaft, means to rotate the same, a mold carried .on said shaft and having a perforated mold-face, and a connection between said perforated mold-face and said shaft whereby a draft of air may be passed through the same to loosen said article located on said face.

18. In a pulp-machine in combination, a rotating carrier having fixed thereon a perforated convex mold-face, means to automatically deposit a layer of pulp thereon, and means to automatically firmly compress said layer upon said face in a direction toward the axis of said carrier.

In a pulp-machine in combination, a rotating carrier having fixed thereon a perforated convex mold-face, means to automatically deposit a layer of pulp thereon, and means to automatically firmly compress said layer upon said face in a direction toward the axis of said carrier and comprising a second moldface adapted to move toward and away from said first face and means to positively force said second face against said first face.

In a pulp-machine in combination, a rotating carrier having fixed thereon a succession of perforated convex mold-faces, means to automatically deposit a layer of pulp thereon in succession, and means to automatically firmly compress said layer upon said faces in succession and in a direction toward the axis of said carrier.

In a pulp-machine in combination, a pulp-vat, a carrier rotating on a substantially horizontal axis and having fixed thereon a succession of perforated convex mold-faces dipping in succession into said vat, means whereby suction may be applied through said faces when in said vat to deposit a layer of pulp thereon, and means to automatically firmly compress said layer upon said faces in succes* sion and in a direction toward the axis of said carrier.
22. In a pulp-machine in combination, a vat, a carrier rotating on a substantially horizont-al axis and having fixed thereon a succession of perforated mold-faces dipping in succession into said vat, means whereby suction may be applied through said faces while in said vat to deposit a layer of pulp on said faces in succession, and means to firmly compress said layer upon said faces in succession in a direction toward the axis of said carrier and while said faces are traveling.
23. In a pulp-machine in combination, a rotating carrier having thereon one or more perforated mold-faces, means to automatically deposit a layer of pulp on said face, a second molding device adapted to cooperate with said face to mold the article between them, and means to compress the two together in a direction transverse to the axis of rotation of' said carrier, said molding device being adapted to travel along with said other face during .the

24. In a pulp-machine in combination, a rotating carrier having thereon one or more perforated mold-faces, means to automatically deposit a layer of pulp on said face, a reciprocating mold-face adapted to coperate with said lirst face to mold the article between them, and means to positively compress the two together in a direction transverse to the axis of rotation of said carrier, said reciproeating mold-face being adapted to travel along with said other face during the time when said reciprocating mold-face is in contact with said layer.
25. In a pulp-machine in combination, a rotating carrier having thereon a perforated together in a direction transverse to the axis of rotation of said carrier, said molding device being adapted to travel along with said other face during the time when said molding device is in contact with said layer.l
