Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MAXIMILIAN BURCHARDT,OF BERLIN, PRUSSIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SELF-FEEDING PLUGGING-TOOLS FOR DENTISTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,428, dated October 10, 1865.
To all whom 'it may concern.-
Beit known that I, MAXIMILIAN BURcH- ARDLM. D., ofBerlin, in the Kingdom ot'Prussia, have invented a new and Improved Dentists Plugging-Tool; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, which will enable others skilled in the art to fully understand and use the same, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ot' this specitication, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation ot' this invention. g Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section, and Fig. 4 an end view, of the same on an enlarged scale. Figs. 5 and 6 are detached inside views of the two halves.
Similar letters of reference in all the igures represent corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a dentists plugging-tool which may be called self-feeding, the strip of gold or other material used in plugging being passed through a cavity extending throughout the entire length of the tool and emanating at its thin end in close proximity to the projection or tongue which serves for the purpose of pressing the plugging material into the cavity of the tooth to be plugged in such a manner that, by the act of pressing the end of the material into the tooth, the strip is made to feed itself, and the operation ot' plugginga tooth can begperformed with one hand, and with the greatest convenience and dispatch.
Arepresents in y plu gging-tool ,which is made of metal or any other suitable material, and provided with a cavity, a, extending from its thick end clear down to its lip, where it passes out close over the tongue c, that serves for pressing the plugging material into the tooth. In order to be able to form this cavity in the tool, Imake it in two halves, (such as shown in Figs. 5 and 6,) one halt' being provided at its thin end with a socket, el, to receive the end ot' the other halt', iu which a groove extends throughout its entire length, so that when the two halves are put together the desired cavity is formed. On the thick ends of the two halves I place a cap, e, which is secured by a screwthread, as shown, or which may be secured in any suitable manner. I do not wish to restrict like a strip of paper, and after the same has been passed through the cavity in the tool so that its ends extends somewhat beyond the tongue c (see Fig. 1) the tool is ready for operation. As the end of the strip is pressed into the cavity ot' the tooth it is wedged in sufciently tight to allow of drawing the tool back and to cause the strip ot' plugging material to be drawn or fed to the tongue just as it is Wanted. -The operation ot' plugging can thus be performed with one hand, and the other hand can be used to hold open the mouth of the patient, whereas with the ordinary tool the operator is compelled to hold the plugging-tool in one and the plugging material in the other hand, so that he has to depend upon the aid of an assistant to hold open the mouth ot' the patient.
MAXIMILIAN BURCHARDT.
