Description

4 G.'G.DURR. ARTIFICIAL TOOTH. 2 v I I Patented Aug. 29,1893.
zir7tey;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES C. DURR, OF PLYMOUTH, INDIANA.
ARTIFICIAL TOOTH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,126, dated August 29,1893.
Application filed April 18, 1893- Serial No. 470,847. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. DURR, a
- citizen of the United States, residing at Plymouth, in the county of Marshall and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Artificial Teeth; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide means for attaching artificial crowns to the roots of natural teeth whereby a firm and rigid connection is made that will successfully resist the force of the pressure put upon the crown while masticating, which object I attain by the means substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a perspective view of the root of a natural tooth and the tube or band employed in forming a connection between the root and the crown; Fig. 2 a side elevation of the root showing the tube or band in position over the same and in section when an impression of the face of the root is to be taken by means of wax or other like material; Fig. 3 a sectional elevation of the tube or band when removed, showing the wax impression and the mold obtained therefrom; Fig. 4 a detail View in perspective of the tube or band showing it slit to form claws; Fig. 5 a similar view showing the claws bent in shape to receive the material which is to form the artificial crown; Fig. 6 a sectional view showing the tube or band and the crown connected together. Fig. 7 represents a perspective view showing the complete crown connected to the root of the natural tooth.
In the accompanying drawingsA represents the root of a natural tooth and B the metal band or tube of the required size and thickness to fit accurately to the prepared root.
In carrying out my invention, the tube or band when made to nicely fit the root is placed thereon and filled with wax or some other impression material which is pressed well up or against the face of the root so as to properly take a clean impression thereof, asshown in After the cast from the impression has thus been made the wax or other impression material is removed from inside the tube or band I and the sides thereof slit as shown in Fig. 4 so as to provide claws c entirely around the circumference of the tube or band. The claws are then bent over by any suitable means as shown in Fig. 5, the cast of the face of the root as indicated at b forming a guide for the depth of crown as well as for the crown itself. These claws are so arranged, twisted and shaped, as to provide the greatest possible surface for attachment to the porcelain or other material used in making the crown which is shown at 0, Figs. 6 and 7, the claws extending well up into the crown to make it rigid and strong.
Before applying the material which is to form the crown, the tube or band is filled with tissue paper to prevent the material from running inside the tube or band, the cast of the face of the root being first removed. After the crown is thus completed with its tube or band, it is connected to the root of the natural tooth by suitable cement, the tube or band withits claws being adapted to all class of crown work and providing a very strong and durable means of forming a connection between the rootof the natural tooth and the artificial crown.
Filling the tube with plaster of paris or other suitable material to secure a model of the face of the root provides a very simple means of obtaining a guide to turn or bend the claws and also as a guide to the depth of the crown. 7
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The method substantially herein described of connecting artificial crowns to the roots of natural teeth, consisting in first forming a tube or band to fit the root, placing the same over the root and taking an impression of the face thereof by placing in the tube or band a suitable impression material, remov ing the tube or band and taking a mold from In testimony that I claim the above I have the impression to serve as a guide, slitting and hereunto subscribed my name in the presence 10 bending the tube or band and forming the of two Witnesses. crown thereon as set forth.
5 2. A tube or band slitted as shown to form CHARLES DURR' inwardly extending claws for connecting Witnesses: thereto an artificial crown, substantially as H. A. LOGAN, and for the purpose set forth. CHAS. P. DRUMMOND.
