COMBINED SIDEBOARD AND EXTENSION-TABLE.

A SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,072, dated August 29, 1893.

Be it known that I, CLARENCE F. WATERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Sideboard and Extension-Table, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combined side board and extension table, and the invention consists in an extension table adapted to fold within the 'side board, and to be drawn entirely free therefrom, the object of the invention being to construct an extension table which can be folded and concealed when not in use, and which can be extended and withdrawn from the case or side board when in use.

These objects I accomplish by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a side elevation of my in vention with the extension table drawn out from the side board. Fig. 2 shows a front elevation of the same with the extension table shoved into the side board.

A. represents the side board constructed in any suitable manner. I prefer the side board of such width as to allow the extension table to fold in near the center thereof as shown in Fig. (2).

B. is the stationary part of the table top.

C is the curtain top adapted to fold over pulleys or rollers, shown by N.

DE and F. represent the extension slides on one side of the table. It will be understood that the other side of the table has corresponding extension slides.

H is aweig hted lever pivoted to the slide D at I, so that the longer end of said lever or the part which extends the farthest from the pivot I may act as a weight.

The curtain top C is hinged to the extension slides D at the point 0 as shown.

In Fig. (1) the dotted lines show the position of the curtain table top when the extension table is folded within the side board.

'The operation of my invention is as follows: Let the extension table be folded within the side board with the curtain top in the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. (1) when the notch or recess L will engage with the pin M., looking or holding the extension slides D in position. By drawing outwardly the table, the extension slides will be drawn out into the position shown in Fig. (1), when the pin J. will strike against the upper inclined surface of the lever 11., lifting the longer end of the lever and freeing said lever H from the pin M. at the point when the extension table is extended its full length, and the top is in the position shown by the solid lines in Fig. (1), at which point the pin J. engages with the notch K, and the extension table may be removed entirely away from the side board. The pin or stud J does not ride over the roller N, but is placed near the side of the curtain top C which projects on each side beyond the sides and beyond the rollers. A single roller may be employed, extending a sufficient distance to support the table top; or there may be two rollers. The rollers do not extend as far as the studs M and do not have to avoid themin extending or folding the table.

The last leaf of the curtain top is provided with a notch or opening T in line with each stud or pin M so that in drawing the table wholly out of the sideboard case the pins M will not obstruct themovement of the curtain.

In inserting the extension table within the side board, the same is shoved endwise into the side board case until the inclined or bev eled lower surface of the longer end of the lever H strikes the pin or projection M, releasing the pin J from the recess or notch K, allowing the curtain top to fold down in the position shown by the dotted lines. Immediately after the release of the pin J from the notch K, the pin M engages with the notch L, as above described. By this construction the extension table may be withdrawn in whole or in part from the side board, and may be used in connection with the side board, or may be removed to any required distance therefrom.

It will be understood that in Fig. (1) I have shown but one side of the devices for operating the table, and that the other side not shown is a duplicate of the one shown. In Fig. (1) I have also shown a portion of the side board case cutaway or removed in order to show the position of the lever and ext-en- 1 sion slides within the side board. Instead of leaving the table legs exposed as shown in Fig. (2), I prefer to use doors adapted to swing on hinges and inclose or cover the table entirely from sight when folded into the side board.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of a side-board or case, an extension table provided with extension slides, a folding curtain top, provided with a j stop or locking pin, rollers on which said ourtain top folds, a stop or locking pin on a stationary part of the side-board, and a weighted 3o locking lever on one of the table slides, said" locking lever adapted to be automatically engaged with and disengaged from said stops or locking pins, substantially as described.

2. The combination of a sideboard or case, an extension table provided with extension slides adapted to slip by each other, a curtain top, a stop or look upon the curtain top, a weighted lever pivoted on one of the sides and adapted to engage with said stop for locking the table in its extended position, and a lock or stop on the case for automatically operating said locking lever, substantially as described.

3. The combination with an extension table provided with extension slides and acurtain top, and a sideboard or case, of rollers over which said curtain top folds, a weighted automatically actuated locking lever pivoted to one of the table slides, a stop or locking pin on the sideboard or casing and a stop or locklng pin on the curtain top, substantially as described.
