STAND AND STJ OOL FOR ZITHERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,071, dated August 29, 1893.

To a. whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER VON wxs- OINSKI, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at West Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Zither Tables and Stools, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved zither table and sounding box, which can be packed very closely for transportation and storage, and can be rapidly erected to form a support for the zitherand a stool for the zither player, the table being adjustable to any suitable height, to bring the zither in the most convenient position for the performer.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved zither table and stool, placed for transportation and containing the zither. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same, on the line 2 2, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional plan view of the same, on the line3 3, of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional plan view of the same, on the line 4. 4, of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the combined zither table and stool erected for use.

Similar letters of reference indicate corre-- sponding parts.

The flat box A has its ends closed by sliding pieces B B which can be removed to give access to the box. In each corner of said box A, a block 0 is fastened, which is provided with a screw-threaded aperture D extending through to the under side of the box, which aperture can be closed by hinged buttons D pivoted to the under side of the box. In the said screw threaded apertures D the screw necks e of table legs E can be secured, the length of which legs and the screw-necks e is equal to the interior length of the box, so as to permit of placing said legs in the box for transportation, and when the device is not in use, Fig. et showing the four legs in the box. Each leg E contains an extension piece E, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, whichextension pieces can be projected from the lower ends of the hollow legs and can be locked in place by means of a thumb-screw e. able legs F for a stool, which will be described hereinafter From the upper surface of the box a rigid rear wall G projects, and to the ends and front edge of the top of said box a front wall H and the end-walls J are hinged in such a manner that they can swing downward and outward, as shown in Fig. 5. Spring catches h are pivoted to the inner surfaces of the hinged front and end-walls H and J for the purpose of locking them together When in raised position. A handle K is provided on the outer surface of the front hinged wall J, and in said front hinged wall a lock L is also provided.

The cover-plate M is provided with a rabbet N-on the under side for receiving the upper edges of the front and rear walls GandH and the end walls J, which fit very closely so as to hold the cover by friction and the cover can be locked to the front wall by means of the lock L. From the under side of said cover plate M four blocks 0 project, one at each corner, which blocks are provided with recesses or openings 0 extending upward from the bottom for receiving the tenoned ends of the legs F, which legs can be locked in the blocks by means of the thumb-screws O.

A music rack P is hinged to the top of the box A a greater or less distance from the rear fixed wall G, against which it can rest when in raised position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, to support the music, or when not in use, it can be folded down on the top of the box A. The zither R is placed over said rack and is contained within the space formed by the top of the box A, the top plate M, the front and rear walls H and G, and the end walls J.

When the device is not in use the several legs are in the box A, the zither and music rack are in the compartment above the box, the front and end walls H and G are raised and the cover-plate M is held in the same, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2,the'entire device thus forming a convenient receptacle or box for the zither and being in a very compact state, to adapt it to be readily carried aboutor stored. When the player wishes to perform the legs E and F are removed from the box F, the legs E are screwed into the under side of the box A, the cover-plate M is removed and the legs F screwed in the under side of the same, so

as to form a stool, as shown in Fig. 5, the end walls J and front wall H are swung down,tl1e music rack is swung up, so as to rest against the rear wall G, and the extension pieces of the legs E are adjusted so as to bring the zither at the proper elevation in relation to the stool, so as to be in convenient position for the player.

The box is constructed as a sounding box, and gives greater resonance and volume to the tone and beautifies the same.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1-. A combined zither-table, stool and sounding-box, composed of a box for receiving the detachable table legs, and detachable stool legs, walls projecting upward from the top of the said box, a seat fitting on said walls and forming a cover for the same, the top of the box, the said cover and the Walls projecting upward from the top of the box together forming a compartment for a zither, substantially as set forth.

2. Acombinedzither-table,stool and sounding-box, composed of a box for receiving detachable table legs, and detachable stool legs, a fixed wall projecting upward from the top of the box at the rear, and hinged walls on the top of the box at the sides and front, and a seat fitting on said walls when the same are all raised, substantially as set forth.

3. Acombined zither table, stool and sounding-box, composed of a box for receiving the detachable table legs and detachable stool legs, a block in each corner of the box, which blocks have screw threaded apertures open at the bottom of the box, walls on the top of the box, a cover-plate fitting on said walls, and with the top of the box forming a compartment for receiving a zither, which cover-plate also serves as top-plate for a stool, apertured blocks on the under side of said cover-plate at the corners, which blocks have recesses or openings for receiving the upper ends of the stool legs, substantially as set forth.

4. A combined zither table, stool and sounding box, composed of a box for receiving the detachable table and stool legs, a fixed wall and three hinged walls projecting upward from the top of the box, catches for locking the hinged walls to each other and to the fixed wall, when in raised position, a cover plate on said hinged walls, which cover plate forms the seat of the stool and is provided at its under side with apert-ured blocks for receiving the upper ends of the stool legs, substantially as set forth.
