GUTTER POR FILMS.
- (No Model.)
GUTTER PoR F-IILMS;
' 1 IatentedAug.l 29,51893.
UNTTED; STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALOIS DELUG, OF MUNICH, GERMANY.
CUTTER FOR FILMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,062, dated August 29, 1893.
Application fled January 10, 1893. Serial No. 457,903. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoIs DELUG, a subject of the King of Bavaria, residing at Munich, Bavaria, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutters for Films, dac., of which the -following is a specification.
The present invention relates to devices for cutting photographic films and other sheets containing pictures, &c., and its object is to provide means whereby sections or portions may be out from a film in the shape of an endless Web or otherwise, and whereby photographic prints may be trimmed in any desired manner and at any desired angle.
For this purpose my invention consists in the means, features and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and covered in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which represent what I consider the best embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 represents'a side elevation; Fig. 2, a transverse section; and Fig. 3 a perspective view of the same, while Fig. 4 represents a detail View.
My film-cutter consists in a quadrangular case, a, provided with a hinged lid, c, whose hinges, b, may be secured either to one of the longitudinal sides, as in Figs. l. and 2, or to one of the transverse sides, as in Fig. 3. A roller, d, carrying the endless film or web is journaled in the case, a, by means of a pintle or stud, c, in one end of the casing, and a removable pin, f, in the opposite end engaging a corresponding socket inthe roller, d, which may be of Wood or the like. The pin, f, may
v be drawn out, and is of such a length as to serve as a bearing for film-rollers of different lengths. A knife, g, is pivoted to the side of the case, a, preferably at the lower corner, as shown. This knife, as shown, is provided with a web at its back, whereby the knife is L-shaped in cross-section, as shown. This web serves both to stiffen the knife and as a convenient handle for grasping the same when cutting. 'Ihe lid, c, is provided with a loop, h, of leather or the like (see Fig. 3) into which the thumb of the operator is introduced, for opening the lid or clamping the same down upon the case, a.
This lm-cutter is operated by opening the lid, preferably by the thumb, as shown in Fig. 3, then drawing out the end of the film until a sufficient length of the same'extends beyond the case, a, then clamping the film" between guide for the cutting operation, inasmuch as the knife, g, lies Hat and snugly against said side wall. The lid, c, may be provided with a protractor, t, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. By-
means of this protractor points jo and the like may be clamped between the case and the lid at any desired angle for trimming the corners (see Fig. 4).
To protect the knife when out of use, I provide the lower edge of the case with a knifeguard, t', (Fig. 2) under which the edge of the knife g is brought when out of use.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a casing, and a lid hinged to the casing, of a film-roll journaled in the casing, a knife pivoted to the side of the casing, and a knife-guard secured to the side of the casing below the knife, sub stantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a casing, a pintle secured to the inner face of one side of the casing, a removable pin insert-ed through the side of the casing opposite said pintle, and' a film-roll having axial sockets in which the pintle and the pin are inserted, of a lid hinged to the casing, a knife pivoted to one side of the casing and provided with a web at its upper edge, and a knife-guard secured to the casing below the knife, substantially a set forth. Y
3. The combination, with a casing,a pintle secured to the inner face of' one side of the casing, a removable pin inserted through the side of the casing opposite said pintle, and a film-roll having axial sockets in which the pintle and the pin are inserted, lof a lid hinged to the casing and having a protractor on its upper surface near one edge, a knife pivoted to one side of the casing and provided with a web at its upper edge, and a knife-guard secured to the casing below the knife, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim/the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribingwitnesses.
