MECHANISM FOR SETTING WATCH-JEWELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,483, dated August 15, 1893.

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. HUNTER, of Elgin, in the county of Kane, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Setting Vatch-.Iewelsgand I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the jewel holding tube separated from the other parts. Fig. 2 is a like View of the detents separated from the tube. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the spring actuated follower. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal section of the tube and its connecting parts and shows the detents separated to permit the jewels to escape. Fig. 5 is a detail view of guard plate G.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts throughout the several figures.
The object of my invention isl to enable watch jewels to be automatically fed into a setting, and to such end my invention consists in the construction of the holding mechanism, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the carrying of my invention into practice,I employ a tubeA which has such diameter of interior as will permit of the ready insertion therein of a series of jewels B and B having the desired diameter. At its outer end said tube is inclosed by means of a number of spring detente C and C that normally occupya closed position and prevent the outward passage of jewels, but may when desired, be moved radially outward so as to leave the outer end of said tube free. The inner or rear end 'of the tube Ais closed and within the interior is placed a follower D that loosely fills the same laterally, and by means of a spring E, which is placed between its rear end and the rear end of said tube operates to hold such jewels as are placed at its front with a yielding pressure against the detents Cand C. In the use of the jewel holding tube, it is inserted into'and locked within a suitable supporting part F which part is provided with an outwardly and forwardly inclining surface that engages oppositely inclined faces c and c which are provided upon the projecting ends of the detente C and C and operate to spread the latter apart just as thc tube reaches position within said supporter. In order that when the detents are spread apart the jewels may not escape there is provided in front of the tube A a swinging or rotary guard plate G which is held in position in front of said tube by means of a spring and when pushed to one side so as to uncover the latter automatically ret-urns to place when released.
To set a jewel, the setting is formed upon the end of a rod and is then moved in front of the tube A and in a line axially therewith. When thus moved to position said setting,or its holder, engages with and moves the guard plate G to one side so that when the axes of said setting and tube coincide, a jewel will be pressed outward into the opening in the former.
Having thus described my invention, what 7o I claim isn l. As an improvement in mechanism for mechanically setting jewels, a holder having a jewel receiving opening to receive and hold a number of jewels, and `a detent, or stop, movable into and out of the path of a jewel in making its exit from said opening substann tially as and for the purpose specified.
2. As an improvement in mechanism for mechanically setting jewels, a holder having So a longitudinal passage or chamber to receive and hold a number of jewels in line with each other, and a detent that normally prevents the exit of such jewels, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
3. As an improvement in mechanism for mechanically setting jewels a holder, having a longitudinal, jewel-receivi1ig opening for holding a number of jewels and at one end several spring actuated detents that normally 9o extend over the opening to prevent the exit of a jewel, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4:. As an improvement in mechanism for mechanically setting jewels, a holder having 95 a longitudinal jewel receiving opening and several spring actuated detents that normally extend over the opening, each of which has an abrupt inner face, and a beveled outer face, substantiallyas and for the purpose de zoo scribed.
5. As an improvement in jewel setting mech anism, a holder having a passage 4to receive and contain a number of jewels that is normally closed against the exit of jewels, and is adapted to be automatically opened, and means to cause theexit of a jewel when it is opened, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
6. As an improvement in jewel setting mechanism, the combination of a jewel holder having its jewel exit barred by a detent or stopy movable into and out of the path of a jewel a support for such holder adapted to engage and hold said detent out of thepath of a jewel, A
substantially as and for the purpose shown.

As an improvement in jewelsetting meehanism, the combination of a jewel holder having its jewel exit barred by a detent or detents, each of which has a beveled face, a support for such holder having a projection to engage the beveled faces of said detents, substantially as and for the purpose described.

As an improvement in jewel setting mechanism, the combination of a jewel holder having its jewel exit barred by a detent or detents, each of which has a beveled face, a support for such holder having a projection to engage the beveled .faces of said detents, and a movable plate adapted to Cover and uncover the jewel exit, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
