UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARNOLD KOI-IL, OF CENTRALIA, ILLINOIS.
BIN DI NG-POST FOR ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,427, dated August 15, 1893.
Application filed March 24, 1893. Serial No. 467,477. (Nc model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, ARNOLD KOHL, of Centralia, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Binding-Post for Electrical Connections, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in Which- Figure l is a side sectional elevation of a gas bracket provided with my improved binding posts. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical transverse section of the binding post. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical transverse section of a double binding post; and Fig. it is an end View of a binding screw.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective binding post for insertion in gas fixtures, for making connections between the wire contained by the gas fixtures, and the house Wires and burner Wires.
My invention consists in a threaded post perforated by one or more longitudinal holes, provided with a clamping screw entering the side, a contact screw entering the end, and a binding nut on the contact screw, all as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The body a of the binding post A, is made of insulating material such as hard rubber or vulcanized liber. The body is bored axially forasinglewire, as shown in Fig. 2, and is perforated with two or more longitudinal holes when it is to be used for making connections with two or more wires. The end of the post which is to be inserted in the gas fixture is provided with an external thread, and the outer end is threaded internally to receive the contact screw b. The screw b is preferably threaded throughout its entire length, and upon it is placed a metallic nut c. In the side of the postis inserted a binding screw d.
The insulated wire B, which is to be inserted in the post is stripped of insulating material at the end, and its end is received in a hole e bored axially in thelower end of the screw b. The wire B is clamped by the screw d, and the screw b is turned down into electrical contact with the stripped end of the wire B. Two such binding posts are necessary for completing the circuit through a gas fixture, one being inserted in the fixed end of the fixture, the other being inserted in the end next the burner. The wireB is con veyed through the fixture and is secured at its ends in the binding posts. clamped between the end of the binding post body A and the metallic nut c, and the Wire leading to the electrical gas lighter is clamped in a similar manner by the nut c ofthe binding post adjoining the burner.
The construction of the double binding post shown in Fig. 3, is the same as that already described, wth the exception of the insertion of two or more Wires, two or more binding screws and two or more contact screws. This binding post is used where the return current is conveyed by a Wire instead of the fixture itself.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. An electrical binding post, formed of a longitudinally-bored body, a clamping screw inserted in the side of the body and adapted to clamp an insulated wire within the binding post, a contact screw inserted in the end of the binding post, and a clamping nut on the contact screw, substantially as specified.
2. An electrical binding post, formed of a body of insulating material bored axially and provided with a clamping screw, an axially bored contact screw inserted in the end of the post, and a clamping nut placed on the contact screw, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with a gas fixture or any pipe, of binding posts inserted in the fixture and provided with clamping and contact screws, substantially as specified.
ARNOLD KOI-IL.
