SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,389, dated August 15, 1893.

Beit known that I, JOHN SHEPPMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toys, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a toy formed of a box with a mirror therein, the same primarily concealing a picture, and being adapted to expose said picture in lieu of the image re- I'lected in the mirror, as Will be hereinafter fully set forth.

Figuresl and 2 represent perspective views of a toy embodying my invention. Figs. 3 and 4 represent vertical sections on lines oc, and y, y, respectively, Figs. l and 2. Fig. 5 represents a vertical section on line e', e, Fig. 4t.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings: A designates a box having a portion of its front Wall or face removed, forming the opening B.

C designates a mirror in said box, the same being adapted to move from the top to the bottom thereof, and vice versa.

Depending from the rear of the frame of the mirror is a spring tongue D, the lower end whereof is provided. with a button E, the latter being adapted to enter an opening F in the back plate of the box in order to hold the mirror in. elevated position.

Connected With the frame of the mirror is a inger-piece G for conveniently raising the same, said piece projecting forward therefrom in the opening l).

On the inner face of the back of the box is a picture, figure, or representation Il, such as an ape, monkey, the., the same being primarily covered and concealed by the mirror.

Secured to the frame of" the mirror and lower portion of the box, are pins or hooks .l and K, respectively, and passing around said pins is an endless band L, of rubber or other elastic material, forming a spring for quickly loWering the mirror.

The operation is as follows, the parts being in position shown in Figs. l and 3: The box is shown to a party who sees himself in the mirror. The button E is then pressed in to full extent by the holder of the box, when the mirror quickly disappears and the figure H is apparently substituted therefor. When the mirror is again raised, the button E springs into the opening F, thus locking the tongue and retaining said mirror in elevated position. On the rear of the frame of the mirror, at the sides thereof, are fianges M, which ride upon the back Wall of the box and form a chamber to receive the main length of the tongue D, whereby the latter is set forward from the picture H, Which is prevented from being scratched by the rising and falling movements of said tongue, said tongue also serving by its pressure on the box and mirror to hold the latter, and preventing rattling thereof.

Having thus described my invention, What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A box having an opening in the front face thereof, a movable mirror primarily occupying said opening, and a representation of an animal, rbc., on the box, back of said opening and mirror, substantially as described.

2. A box containing a movable mirror and having an opening in its face in front of said mirror, a representation of an animal, die., cn the box, back of said opening and mirror, and a tongue connected with the mirror adapted to interlock with the box, substantially as described.

8. A box containing a mirror and representation of an animal, dsc., back of said mirror, the face of the box in front of the mirror be ing open, in combination with a tongue connected with the mirror for holding the latter, in elevated position, and a spring connected with the mirror and box for lowering said mirror, substantially as described.

it. In a toy substantially as described, a movable mirror having ianges on the sides of its rear face, and a locking tongue connected with the mirror in the chamber formed by said flanges, as stated.

5. A box With a partly open face, a movable mirror in said box, a representation on the back of the box behind the opening in the face thereof, a spring 4connected with the mirror and box for lowering said mirror, and an elastic tongue connected with the mirror and adapted to interlock with the box for holding said mirror in elevated position, and create pressure against the mirror, substantially as described.
