LANTERN-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 622,122, dated March 28, 1899.

To all whont it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE ALONZO COR- NIsH, of Gillette, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Lantern-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention is a device for holding lanterns so that the rays of light will be effectively shed therefrom; and the invention is adapted particularly to carriages, serving to hold the lantern j ust forward of thebody beneath the dashboard or at any other convenient place on the under side of the body.

This specification is the disclosure of one form of my inve'ntiomwhile the claims define the actual scope of the invention.

Reference is to be-had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention, showing the manner of using the same; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the invention.

The lantern-holder is adapted to be permanently affixed to a suitable support 3, which may be either the bottom portion of a carriage-body ora separate supporting-plate fastened in any convenient place under the carriage-body. The holder is formed of two bent wires, the first wire having its ends 4 bent upward and secured in the support 3. From said ends the wires run out horizontally and are looped to form laterally-offset arms 5, and from the arms 5 the wire extends out hori zontally and has a rearwardly-projected loop 6 at its middle, forming two forwardly-extending arms '7. The second wire has its ends 8 coiled on its vertical intermediate portions 9. From the ends 8 the second wire extends upward and rearward and has a portion 10 clenched to the under side of the support 8. From each of the portions 10 the wire is extended inward and formed with coils 1.1, embracing the first wire near its ends 4E. From the coils 11 the two portions of the second wire extend outward and are looped and the loops bent to form clasps 12. The arms 5 of the first wire respectively bear down on the portions of the second wire at points between the coils 11 and clasps 12, such arms serving to brace the said portions of the second wire and prevent upward movement thereof.

From the clasps 12 the two portions of the wire run downward to form the aforesaid portions 9,which extend vertically and terminate in loops forming clasps 14,similar to the clasps 12. From the clasps 14 the second wire extends rearward and is formed into a coil 15, which coil is located at the actual center of said second wire.

The holder thus constructed is employed in connection with the standard or ordinary form of lantern. These lanterns have shades 16, held by tubular framing 17. .The lantern is held. by engaging the

14 and 12 with the side bars of the frame 17 and by extendin g the arms 7 of. the first-named wire beneath the top bar of said frame. The

12 and 14 hold the frame rigidly and prevent loose movement of the latter, while the arms, each bearing beneath the top bar of the frame, support the frame and prevent the dropping of the lantern. ing firmly engaged, respectively, with the two portions of the second wire,serve to provide a structure sufficiently rigid to support the lantern in position and at the same time of such resiliency as to avoid jarring and smashing the lantern.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of a lanternholder,the latter having two wires attached to said support, the first wire having laterally-extending arms and also having forwardly-extending arms, and the second wire having clasps, the forwardly-extending arms of the first wire being engaged with the lantern-frame to-support the lantern, and the clasps of the second wire being engaged with the lantern-frame to prevent vibration thereof, and the lateral arms of the first wire bearing down on horizontal portions of the second wire.

2. A lantern-holder having two Wires, the first wire being provided with two loops extending laterally to form arms, and with a portion extending inwardly, forwardly and rearwardly to form a loop with two forwardlyprojecting arms, said forwardly-projecting arms being arranged to engage the frame of the lantern to prevent the lantern from dropping and the second wire having clasps capable of engaging the lantermframe to prevent The arms 5 of the first wire be- ICO 10 per portion of the lantern-frame so as to support the frame from dropping from between the elasps, the lantern-holder having a portion projected rearwardly and upwardly by which to attach theholderto a support located above the lantern.
