SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,355, dated August 15, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, ANNA B. S. PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salina, in the county of Saline and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Shawl-Strap and Traveling-Companion; and I do declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in a combined shawl-strap and traveling bag or companion, for wearing apparel, or similar articles.

The object of the invention is to produce in addition to an ordinary shawl strap, a receptacle made entirely of flexible or pliable material so that it can be rolled for transportation and for not only transporting ashawl, cloak or its equivalent, but also to provide said receptacle with a number of smaller and larger pockets or compartments, in which the different kinds of wearing apparel, shoes, due, as well as brushes, combs, or other toilet articles, can be kept separated from each other; also to arrange said pockets in such manner, that the different kinds of articles are accessible in a very commodious and advantageous manner; furthermore to produce a receptacle, that can be easily suspended from a nail, hook, or its equivalent in an extended condition, so as to better gain access to the different articles desired, especially in railroad cars, or small hotels, and to obviate the necessity of placing the articles in a bureau, closet, 8.70.; also to facilitate the rolling up of the recepta- 010 with the articles contained therein in a very compact and small compass, for carrying it, and finally to dispense with the use of the ordinary valise or trunk, which are heavier, as well as inconvenient and expensive, and liable to get out of order or become broken.

'With these objects in view, my invention consists in the construction of certain details, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters marked thereon.

Like letters indicate similar parts in the different figures of the drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the receptacle extended and showing the interior side with the pockets. Fig. 2 is a sec tional view of the receptacle in a rolled condition for transporting the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the strap bar modified. In the drawings, Arepresents the outer covering or casing of any desired size, and preferably made of any suitable water-proof material, such as oilcloth, rubber, canvas, linen, cotton, or its equivalent, and it may be lined, if desired. This covering is secured at its upper end to a bar of wood, metal, or its equivalent B. In some instances, this bar may be made of angle,- T, or similar shaped iron, to give greater rigidity with lightness to it, and it can be secured to the covering in any suitable manner. Said covering is provided with side flaps C, so that the ends of the entire bundle and the articles contained therein, are prevented from getting wet or being soiled, when rolled up.

On the inside of the covering A are arranged first, two or more interior pockets G and H, extending the length of the article, open at the ends and are fastened by tapes, on which pockets a number of smaller pockets D and E, forming separate receptacles, as manyas desired, for containing different kinds of wearing apparel, shoes, combs, brushes, looking-glass, or other toilet articles.

The months or openings of each pocket are provided with flaps d and c, having buttons and button-holes, or any number of pieces of tape or its equivalent, so that they can be closed in a convenient and rapid manner, and thereby keep the different articles separated, and yet easily accessible, when required. preferto use the pockets E at the lower end, for containing brushes, soap, or othertoilct articles, or handkerchiefs, neckties, no. If desired, the pockets arranged behind the smaller pockets and extending from end to end of the receptacle, may be used to receive dresses, skirts, pants, &c. In some instances the bar B may be made of angle, T, or similar-shaped iron or steel, to give greater rigidity with lightness to it, and it can be secured to the covering in any suitable manner, or it maybe made removable.
