Be it known that I, IDA A. GUTSELL, of Ithaca, in the county of Tompkins, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in DollProducing Blanks, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in toys, and it has for its object the production of a doll producing blank or pattern composed of a printed fabric blank having sections of such form and arrangement that they are readily cut from the blank and are quickly and easily secured together with the exercise of a comparatively small degree of skill for forming a durable doll of an attractive and realistic appearance.

To this end my invention consists, essentially, in a front body section having side edges and having head, arm, leg, and foot portions, thehead portion being formed with a central cut-out extending downwardly from the upper edge of said head portion, whereby the doll head is provided with raised realistic features when the edges of said cut-out are secured together, and the doll is made up; and a back body section having side edges for securement to the side edges of the front body section when the doll is made up, said back body section having head, arm, leg, and foot portions, the head portion being formed with a cut-out extending downwardly from the upper edge of said head portion whereby flatness of the rear part of the doll head is prevented when the edges of said cut-out are secured together and the doll is made up, and the leg portions of said rear body section being form ed of greater width than the corresponding portions of the front body section, whereby the foot portions of said sections are twisted or inclined forwardly when the doll is made up.

The invention furthermore consists in a garment section having openings for receiving the arm portions of the doll sections when the doll is made up and having its side edges lapped upon the back body section, a second garment section having a back body portion provided with side edges, a front portion composed of corrcsponding divisions formed integral with the upper part of the back portion and formed with outer side edges for securement to the side edges of the back portion of the garment section when said garment is made up, and sleeve portions formed integral with the former portions and having side edges for securement to each other when the garment is made up, and a head covering section consisting of a body having a rounding edge and projecting arms for seourement to said rounding edge when the body is made up.

In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which,like letters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Fig. 5 is an elevation of the detached upper end of the rear body section of my improved blank, and Fig. 6 is an isometric perspective of the foot and the lower part of the leg portions of the front and rear body sections of my improved blank shown as made up into the foot and lower part the leg of a doll.

It is well known that rag dolls, as heretofore constructed, have been composed of front and rear body sections of exactly the same size and form, and that, when made up, the head is flat 'and necessarily disproportionate, is not provided with raised features, and doesnot present a realistic appearance, and that the feet extend at right angles from the outer sides of the doll legs, thus further deteriorating from the appearance of the doll.

My improved invention consists of an improved blank having front and rear body sections, inner and outer garment sections, and a head covering section, and, as will be more clearly described herein, the body sections are of such simple and practical construction that the head and feet of the doll when made up, present an attractive and realistic appearance, and the garments and head covering sections are quickly and readily cut from the blank with the exercise of a comparatively small degree of skill or ingenuity, and, when placed in proper position upon a doll made up from the body sections, a highly realistic and an extremely attractive dressed doll is produced, which is readily salable and forms a constant source of pleasure.

The blank A consists of the front and back body sections BC, which are provided with the respective head, trunk, arm, leg, and foot portions bb b b b b b b cc -o -c and c -c The front section B- is formed with a cut-out B'- extending downwardly or inwardly from the top edge b of the head portion b of said head section, and this cut-out is formed with a lower extremity -B ,which extends downwardly intothe upper part of the trunk por-' tion b Consequently when the edges of the cut-outs B'B are securedtogether and the doll is made up, the doll head is formed with raised features -b --b b and with a contracted neck b* for giving the doll head and the upper portion of the trunk an extremely realistic appearance.

The head, trunk, and leg portions of the section B may be suitably printed to represent hair -b upon the head, .a complexion upon the face, an inner garment b upon the trunk and arms, and hose b upon the leg portion. The outer ends of the foot portions b -b are each formed with a cutout B extending inwardly from their front edges for giving the toe of the foot a rounding realistic appearance when the edges of the cut-out B are secured together and the doll is made up.

The head portion c of the back section O is formed with a cut-out O extending inwardly from the top edge c of said head section, and is provided with a second cut-out C beneath the former, whereby, when the edges of said cut-outs are secured together and the doll is made up, the back portion of the head is formed rounding, and the neck contracted, and the head and neck thereby given a realistic appearance.

The trunk, arm,andleg portions of the back body section are printed in conformity with the similar portions of the front section, to represent hair -c upon the head,an inner garmentc upon the trunk and arms, and hose c upon the leg portions. The outer ends of the foot portions b b are each formed with a cut-out C extending inwardly from their front edges for giving the toe of the foot a rounding realistic appearance when the edges of the cut-out B are socured together and the doll is made'up.

The lower parts c c of each of the leg portions c c of the back body section are formed of greater width than the corresponding parts b b of the leg portions -b b of the front body section, and consequently when the doll is made up the foot portions b b -c e thereof twist or incline into a natural position at considerable of an angle with the outer sides of the dolls legs and the lower end of the seam formed by the securement together of the outer edges of the lower parts -c c b b of the front of the dolls leg as clearly seen at Figs. 1, 2 and 3. This twisting or inclining of the foot portions b b c c into a natu-' ral position is also effected by forming the leg portions c c of the back body section of greater width between their outer edges than the corresponding portions b b of the front body section, and thus making a greater separation between the lowerendsoftheinner sides of the leg portions c c than between the similar ends of the inner sides of the leg portions b --b all as clearly seen at Fig. 4. It is thus evident thata doll made up from the front and back body sections of my improved doll producing blank presents an extremely realistic and attractive appearance, since its head is provided with raised features, is rounded in a natural manner, and is provided with a contracted neck, and its feet are twisted at an angle with the normal outer sides of the doll legs.

D is a blouse or innergarment section, which is shown as arranged alongside of the base-of the front body section B and as composed of a single piece havingopenings dd for receiving the arms of the (1011 when made up from the front and rear body of a back portion e having longitudinal side edges e'e' and an upper edge consisting of a central section e and end sections e*e a front portion composed of separated divisions -e e having their upper ends integral with the corresponding end of the portion -e and having inner separated side edges e e and outer side edges e e for securement to the edges ee of the back portion -e-, and sleeve portions e -e arranged at an angle less than a right angle with the'back portion e and formed integral with the rear and front portions and provided with side edges e e for securement to each other.

The divisions e e of the front portion e of the garment -E are formed with upper shoulder edges e e9 which are secured to the edge sectionse e of the back section e, and as is evident to one skilled in the art,when the edges e e are secured together and the sleeve edges e* are also secured together the outer ends e of said edges e e and the inner ends -e of the shorter edges e are coincident. It will be readily apparent that this section -E when out from my improved blank and properly made up forms a neat and attractive outer garment or coat, which is in condition for use immediately upon the securement together of the edges ee'-, e 7, .e e e e and the. and correctly fits the shoulders and arms of the doll, without requiring in its make up the care, ingenuity and skill demanded to properly secure separable sleeve pieces in position.

-E is a trimming section, which is printed to represent fur or other trimming, and is of sufficient length to permit of its securement along the inner sides of the divisions -e --e and around the neck side e of the back portion eof the section E-.

-F- is a head covering section consisting of a body -fformed with a rounding outer edge and laterally extending arms f f for securement to the edge -f after the section is cut from my improved blank and said outer edge is suitably gathered. This form of head covering easily fits upon the dolls head, and greatly adds to its appearance.

My invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description and upon reference to the drawings, and it will be particularly noted that my improved fabric doll-producing blank is economically printed in great quantities, and that its component sections may be readily cut therefrom, and easily made up, and that they then form a dressed doll of pleasing and realistic appearance, which is extremely salable and is a highly amusing and attractive toy. It will be evident that the blank is suitably colored and that directions for cutting out the sections and securing together the side edges thereof may be printed upon the blank, but such coloring or directions form no part of my invention.

The operation of my invention will be readily perceived from the foregoing description and upon reference to the drawings, and it will be evident thatits exact construction and conformation may be somewhat varied from that shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The herein described blank for a doll, the same comprising a front body section having side edges, and having a head portion formed with a central cutout extending downwardly from the upper edge of said head portion, whereby the doll head is provided with raised realistic features when the edges of said out out are secured together and the doll is made up, and a back body section having side edges for securement to the side edges of the front body section when the (loll is made up, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. Theherein described blank for a doll, the same comprisingafrontbody section having side edges, and a back body section having side edges for securement to the side edges of the front body section when the doll is made up, said back body section having a head portion formed with a cut out extending downwardly from the upper edge of the head section, whereby flatness of the rear portion of the doll head is prevented when the edges of said out out are secured together and the doll is made up, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. The herein described blank for a doll, the same comprising a front body section having side edges, and a back body section having side edges for securement to the side edges of the front body section when the doll is made up, said back body section having a head portion formed with a cut out extending downwardly from the upper edge of said head section and with a second cut out beneath the former, whereby a realistic appearance is given to the rear portion of the doll head when the edges of said cut outs are secured together and the doll is made up, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. The herein described blank for a doll, the same comprising a front body section having side edges, and having a head portion, formed with a central cut out extending downwardly from the upper edge of said head portion, whereby the doll head is provided with raised realistic, features when the edges of said out out are secured together and the doll is made up, and a back body section having side edges for securement to the side edges of the frontbody section when the doll is made up, said back body section having a head portion formed with a cut out extending downwardly from the upper edge of its head section and formed with a second cut out beneath the former cut out, whereby a realistic appearance is given to the rear portion of the doll head when the edges of said cut outs are secured together and the doll is made up, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

5. The herein described blank for a doll, the same comprising a front body section having side edges and leg and foot portions, and a back body section having side edges for securement to the side edges of the front body section, and having leg and foot portions, the lower extremities of said leg portions being formed of greater width than the correspond ingportions of the frontbodysection, whereby the foot portions of said sections are twisted or inclined forwardly when the doll is made up, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

6. The herein described blank for a doll, the same-comprising a front body section having side edges, and leg and foot portions, the foot portion being formed with a cut out extending inwardly from its front edge, whereby a realistic appearance is given to the correspondin g part of the dolls footwhen the edges of said out out are secured together and the doll is made up, and a back body section provided with side edges for securement to the side edges of the front body section, and having leg and foot portions, the foot portion being formed with a cutout extending inwardly from its front edge whereby a realistic appearance is given to the corresponding part of the dolls foot when the edges of said cut out are secured together and the doll is made 11 p, substantially as and for the purpose specifled.

7. The herein described blank for a doll, the same comprising a front body section having side edges and leg and foot portions, the foot portion being formed with a cut out exten ding inwardly from its front edge, whereby a realistic appearance is given to the corresponding part of the dolls foot when the edges of said out out are secured together and the doll is made up, and a back body section having side edgesfor securement to the side edges of the front body section when the doll is made up and having leg and foot portions,

the lower extremities of each of said leg portions being formed of greater width than the corresponding portions of the front body section, whereby the foot portions of said sections are twisted or inclined forwardly when the doll is made up, said foot portions of the back body section being formed with a cut out extending inwardly from its front edge, wherebya realistic appearance is given to the corresponding part of the dolls foot when the edges of said out out are secured together and the doll is made up, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. The herein described blank fora doll, the same comprising a front body section having side edges and head, leg and foot portions, the head portion being formed with a central cut out extending downwardly from the upper edge of said head portion, whereby the doll head is provided with raised realistic features when the edges of said out out are secured together and the doll is made up, and a back body section having side edges for securement to the side edges of the front body section when the doll is made up and having head, leg and foot portions, the lower extremities of said leg portions being formed of greater width than the corresponding portions of the front body section,whereby the foot portions of said sections are twisted or inclined forwardly when the doll is made up, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

9. The herein described blank for a doll, the same comprising a front body section having side edges, and head, leg and foot portions, and a back body section having side edges for securement to the side edges of the front body section when the doll is made up, and having head, leg and foot portions, the head portion being formed with a cut out extending downwardly from the upper edge of the head section and formed with a second cut out beneath the former, wherebya realistic appearance is given to the doll head when the edges of said cut outs are secured together and the doll is made up, and the lower extremities of said leg portions being formed of greater width than the corresponding portions of the front body section, whereby the foot portions of said sections are twisted or inclined forwardly when the doll is made up, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

10. The herein described blank for a doll, the same comprisinga front body portion having side edges and having head, leg and foot portions, the head portion being formed with a central cut out extending downwardlyfrom the upper edge of said head portion whereby the doll head is provided with raised realistic features when the edges of said out out are secured together and the doll is made up, and

the foot portions being formed with a cut out extending inwardly from the front edge whereby a realistic appearance is given to the corresponding partof the dolls foot when the edges of said out out are secured together and the doll is made up, and a back body section having side edges for securement to the side edges of the front body section when the doll is made up and having head, leg and foot portions, the head portion being formed with a cut out extending downwardly from its upper edge and with a second cut out beneath the former, whereby a realistic appearance is given to the rear portion of the dolls head when the edges of said cut outs are secured together and the doll is made up, the lower extremities of said leg portions beingformed of greater width than the corresponding portions of the front body section, whereby the foot portions of said sections are twisted or inclined forwardly when the doll is made up, and the foot portions being formed with a cut out extending rearwardly from its front edge, whereby a realistic appearance is given to the dolls foot when the edges of said out out are secured together and the doll is made up, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

11. The herein described blank fora dressed doll, the same comprising a front body section having side edges and having arm and head portions, the head portion being formed with a central cut out extending downwardly from the upper edge of said head portion, whereby the doll head is provided with raised realistic features when the edges of said out out are secured together and the doll is made up, and a back body section having side edges for securement to the side edges of the front body section when the doll is made up, and having arm and head portions, said head portion being formed with a cut out extending downwardly from the upper edge of the head section, whereby flatness of the rear portion of the dolls head is prevented when the edges of said out out are secured together and the doll is made up, and a garment section having openings for receiving the arm portions of the front and rear body sections, when the doll is made up and having longitudinal side edges lapping upon the rear body section when the doll is made up, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

12. The herein described blank for a dressed doll, the same comprising a front body section having arm portions and side edges, and a back body section having arm portions and having side edges for securement to the side edges of the front body section when the doll is made up, and a garment section having a back body portion provided with side edges and a front portion composed of correspondlng divisions formed integral with the upper part of the back section and formed with outer side edges for securement to the side edges of the back section of the garment when said garment is made up, and sleeve portions formed integral with the back portion and having side edges for securement to each other when the garment is made up, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

The herein described blank for a dressed doll, the same comprising a front body section having side edges and having a head portion formed with a central cut out extending downwardly from the upper edge of said head portion, whereby the doll head is provided with raised realistic features when the edges of said cutout are secured together and the doll is made up, and a back body section having side edges for securement to the side edges of the front body section when the doll is made up, said back body section having a head portion formed with a cut out extending downwardly from the upper edge of the head section, whereby flatness of the rear portion of the doll head is prevented when the side edges of said out out are secured together and the doll is made up, and a head covering section consisting of a body having a rounding edge and projecting arms for securement to said rounding edge when the head covering section is made up, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

14. The herein described blank for a doll, the same comprising a front body section having side edges and leg and foot portions, and a back body section having side edges for securement to the side edges of the front body section and having leg and foot portions, the inner sides of the lower extremities of said leg portions being separated a greater distance than the similar extremities of the corresponding portions of the front body section, whereby the foot portions of said sections are twisted or inclined forwardly when the doll is made up, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

15. The herein described blank for adressed doll, the same comprising front and back body sections having arm portions, and a garment section having a back body section provided with side edges and with top edges e e a front section composed of corresponding divisions formed integral with the upper part of the back section and formed with outer side edges for securement to the side edges of the back section of the garment when said garment is made up, and provided with edges e e-"-- for securement to the edges e e and sleeve portions formed integral with the back portion and inclining from its side edges at an angle less than a right angle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
