DOLL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 18, 1918. Serial No. 262,981. r I
To all whom it may concem: I
' Be it known that I, PAUL G. DALLWIG, a citizen of the United States, residingat Chicago, in the county of Cook. and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dolls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dolls of the type used by children as toys.
Children, as a general rule, are very imaginative and enjoy mostly those toys which are capable of being varied as to general appearanceby rearrangement at the hands of the child. For young girls the dollis the most popular toy, despite the fact that the facial expression or countenance of the doll remains unchanged at all times and no matter how the doll may be'dressed. Such children also enjoy making clothes for and dressing their dolls in garments of various styles, shades, and patterns, andthe object of my invention is to provide a doll with a set of detachable and interchangeable wigs having varied styles of hair-.dr'ess'so that the fixed facial expression or countenance of the doll has the appearance of being changed by the application of the wigs. In other words,
' with my invention it is possible for the child at pleasure to change the general appearance of a dollfrom a girl to a boy or from an infant to an adult, or from one character to another, by the application to the headof the doll of the wig imitating the hair-dress of the character which the child wishes to display. With invention it is obvious thata single doll provided with'a' plurality of detachable and interchangeable wigs may aflord unlimited amusement to a child and furthermore aid in educating the child, in.
that it is possible to change the general appearance ofa single doll to represent various nationalities and periods in history with the use (if-appropriate wigs and dress.
The invention consists-further in the matters hereinafterdescrihed and more particularly pointed out in theappended c'la-ini's.
' In the accompanying drawingsi 1 Figure l is a front elevational view of the head of a doll embodying the features of rnyinvention and showing the separabletop piece' o'r crown of the head devoid of a wig or imitation thereof;
' Figure 2is a like view .ofthe same. h

- Figure 3 is a like VIGW Of tlIBLSHJDG head with the separable crown or top piecethereo't' provided with a boys wig;
Figure at is a vertical sect1onal view,-with' parts in elevation, taken on line a .4. of Figure 2 gPatented :18,
Figure 5 1s a rear view of said head withf I the separable crown-ortoppmce removed,
but indicated. in dotted lines;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary elevational View of said crown or top piece and showing the I In the drawings, 1 have shown a dolls a perspective view of "said.
such as wood, bisque, or the like, and, as
illustrated,said'head 10 comprises a'basc,v
portion llpfa: shape to fit'over the rounded stuffed bodyoff" a doll and beingseouredtherjeto inany desirable manner. Above said. base 11 is. the head portion 12, joined to saidbas'e by a neck top part and shoulders .ofa
any one of which maybe appliedto the head 10 and .detachably connected therewith. so
that all of the ,wigs'otjthe set are interchangeable with said headi. In Fig. 2,. I
have shown the same headlO provided with 11 i a wig 1.4L- forming one of the wigs ofthe set' supplied with the head. As shown, said w-ig imitating closely the manner in which the hair of a girl of tender years is usually combed vided with. a number otlong curls, 15, as usually worn by children ofthe type" depict edbythe wig 14. {'As illustrated, arlbbon 100. and arranged. Y That is, the r hair ofthe wig is long and pro l6 istied tothe hair of the wig in theshape' a5 stance illustratedis the conventional'type of expression usually employed in the mak of a bow, but the ribbon may be omitted if desired, or the child possessing the doll may attach the ribbon to the wig, at pleasure. In addition to the ribbon 16 the child may apply to the wig any additional part or ornament that may appeal to its fancy.
In Fig. 3, I have illustrated the same head 10, and applied thereto is a boys wig 17 which has the effect of changing the dol from a girl to a. boy. As shown, said wig 17 has the hair thereof arranged in a manner imitating the way in which the hair of a boy is customarily cut and combed. T he face of the dolls head proper of course remains unchanged, but by changing the wins in the manner suggested, the effect noticed produced.
For detachably connecting each wig with the head 10, I have shown in the drawings a form ofconstruction by which that may be accomplished. As illustrated, the head 12 is provided with a crown portion or top piece 18, which when applied in proper po sition to the head 12 completes the same. Said top piece 18 has its upper or top surface 19 curved or crown shaped to conform to the curvature required for the crown of said head 12. Said crown piece 18 is made solid, as shown in Fig. 41, and has its lower or bottom face 20 made flat so as to seat or bear against a complementary flat surface 21 forming the upper face of the head portion 12, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. Such surface 21 is above the eyes and ears of the head portion 12, and is given substantially the inclination shown in the drawings. Said crown piece 18 is provided with a socket or recess 22, preferably circular in shape and opening outwardly through the lower face 20 of said crown piece, and into which enters a projection or plug 23 made integral or otherwise rigidly connected with the head portion 12. Said plug 23 projects upwariil above the top surface 21. and is made cylindrical in shape so as to easily enter said socket 22. The base of said plug 23 is arranged substantially concentric with the circular surface 21, but projects upward therefrom at such an angle that in removing; the crown piece 18 from the head of the doll. said crown piece pivots about a point a. at thefront edge of said upper surface 21. Such being the case, the rear surface 7) of said plug 23 is curved longitudinally or up and down to conform to the movement of the crown piece in pivoting about said point a. The walls of the socket 22 are likewise curved so that the parts will not bind in removing the crown piece from the head portion 12. To retain said crown piece 18 on the head portion 12 when properly applied thereto, I provide a latch member 24 preferably made from a strip of resilient metal and being secured to the crown piece 18 at the rear thereof. Said latch member 2 1 extends downward below the crown piece and snaps beneath a downwardly facing shoulder provided at the back of the head portion 12. Said shoulder may be made in any-suitable manner, either as an integral oart of the head portion 12 or by a header metal member driven into the head portion 12 as shown in the drawings. The lower end of said latch member curved inward so as to more readily snap beneath sai'l shoulder 25. I
To facilitate removing the crown piece 18, there is provided adjacent the upper end of the latch member 2 1 a button or like outward projection 26 adapted to have the thumb or finger of the hand of the child, in
removing said crown piece 18 engaged beneath the same. Said button 26 may also be madeof metal and be driven into the crown piece 18 for securing the same thereto. By arranging the socket 22 and plug 23 atthe angle shown and'by the use of the latch member 24, the crown piece 18 is held firmly on the head portion 12 and is pre vented from dropping off of the head should. the doll be handled roughly or be inverted or held upside down, as is likely to occur when in the hands of a child.
As shown in Fig. 1, said crown piece 18is devoid of a wig or imitation thereof, and is preferably painted or otherwise colored to represent a bald head, so that when applied to the head portion 12 it will have the effect of giving the dolls head the appearance of a very young infant. This will be further marked when the doll is dressed in infants long: clothes. lVith the i set of wigs for each doll, one of such crown pieces 18 may be supplied. In Figs. 2. 3, and 1. the gir s wig 14 has an inner lining or fabricportion 27, to which the hair of the win; is secured. Said wig 1.41 is applied over the top or curved surface of a crown piece and secured thereto by an adhesive or other means. In Fig. 3. the boys wig 17 is likewise applied and secured to a crown piece 18. It is to be of course understood that the crown pieces 18 are made alike, and there is acrown'piece for each wig of the set, and further that, when a wig is removed from the dolls head, the crown piece of the wig is removed with'the same i as a part thereof. While I have shown two types of wins 14 and 17, it is to be understood that each doll equipped with my invention may be supplied with a plurality of wins. each secured. to a crown piece 18, and all will have the same features of construction. except that the hair-dress of the wins will be different. so that the single doll may be changed by the use of the wigs to represent different characters by applying appropriate wigs thereto. In Fig. 7, I have shown a crown piece 18, the curved or top to imitate a wig, in the example shown, a boys wig, and a set of wigs so made may be imitate the dress of different nationalities,
as well as styles, or I may provide with the set of wigs a wig for each nationality, as well as a wig for each of several characters of history or otherwise, that is, a .wig in imitation of the conventional type of hair-dress distinctive of the particular nationality or character to be represented. In
the same way, with the boys wig-l7 the dress of the dollmay be changed to meet the fancy of the child. It is apparent that with my invention the imaginative and creative powers of the child are strongly appealed to and the child. permitted to gain great amusement and enjoyment out of a single doll provided with a set or plurality of wigs.
While I have shown in the drawings and described herein a dolls head of the type illustrated, yet it is to be of course understood that the head may be of any other type. Moreover, while I have shown in the drawings a dolls head having a face of the type depicting an infant, yet it is to be of,
course understood that my invention could be readily applied to the head of afigure having a more mature face. The manner of detachably connecting the wig to the head as shown and described of course may be variously changed and modified without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. i
In the specification and claims I have used the expression dolls head. and by that I mean the head of any artificial figure to which my inventionmay be applied, and by the use of the term wig I mean any kind of wig which may be used. whether a wig provided with real hair or an imitation thereof. or a carved. or painted wig, as.
shown in Fig. 7 Itis to be further noted that with the kind of wig shown in Figs. 2. 3, and 4:, the crown piece 18 used therewith serves to fill thewig and hold it distended at all times; 7
I claim as my invention:
