REIN-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters 1 atent No. 503,297, dated August 15, 1893.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, VACKSON L. TALBOT, of St. Paul, Ramsey county, Minnesota, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Rein-Holders for Dashboards, of which the following is a specification.

Myinvention relates to devices for holding and securing the harness reins to the vehicle when not in use, in convenient position for the driver; its object being to provide a simple device attachable to the dash board, to which the reins may be attached and instantly disconnected when necessary for use.

To this end my invention consists in providing a clamp which tits over the dash board and is there secured in adjusted position by means of a set screw, one member of the clamp being provided with a hook having a double bend, into which bends the reins are entwined and held from displacement, but from which also they can be readily detached.

My invention further consists in the specific construction and combination hereinafter described and particularly pointed ont in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure lis an isometrical projection of ""part of a dash board, with my improved device secured thereto, and Fig.2 is a side elevation of the same, the dash board being shown in section.

In the drawings 2 represents a dash board of ordinary construction, to the top of which is secured the rein holder A. This is made up of a clamp, the members 3 and 4 of which extend downward on each side of the dash board,and is secured in position by means of the set screw 5 threaded through the member 3, having a bearing plate 6 which is pressed against the front of the dash board. lt can he placed upon the dash hoard centrally or atthe side close to the drivers position, as desired. To the rear member 4 is rigidly connected the S shaped hook 7 having the reverse lateral bends S and 9. When it is desired to secure the reins l0 they are first slipped sidewise into the bend 8, and then passed from the opposite side into the bend 9, the hand pieces depending therefrom as shown in Fig. 2. From this position it is impossible to dislodge the reins by any pull from the ends attached to the bits, but they can be instantly removed by slipping the hand pieces ott the point of the bend 9.

The device when attached to the dashboard is entirely out of the way, and the hook being formed integral with or rigidly attached to the device, does not rattle, and when nicely finished is ornamental rather than disfiguring to the vehicle.

I claiml. The combination of the U shaped clamp adapted to be fitted over the top of a dash board, the set screw threaded in one member thereof, and the S shaped hook rigidly attached to the other member thereof, substantially as described.

2. The combination of the U shaped clamp, the set screw for securing the same to a dash board and the hook consisting of a double or reverse bend rigidly attached to said clamp and lying in a horizontal plane, substantially as described.
