SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,194, dated August 15, 1893.

To all whom it mag concern.-
Be it known that I, RUFUS SAMUEL BUR NETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Forge-Tray, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to an improved forge tray, and it has for its object to provide means for preventing the loss or waste of fuel incident to the use of the ordinary forms of forges; and to provide means for concentrating the heat without interfering with the operations of the smith and without intercepting his view of the irons.
Furtherobjectsand advantagesof myinvention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claim.

1 designates a rectangular cast-metal tray or plate, provided upon its under surface with depending transverse cleats or bars 2 which engage the sides of the pedestal 3. 4. represents the fire basin or cavity which is arranged at the center of the tray,being integral therewith, and is provided in its center with the draft hole or opening 5 to which 1s adapted to be connected the tube from a bellows (not shown). Arranged at one side of the basin or cavity, and communicating therewith, is a radially disposed channeled rest 6, which is designed to receive and hold the tongs, irons, or other implements employed about a forge to hold articles to be heated.
7 represents a hood, which is arranged over the basin or cavity, and for convenience in handling it may be hinged at one side to the plateat one side of the basin and provided at the opposite side with a handle 8 whereby 1t can be swung over to permit of arranging or fueling the fire.' This hood is provided with perforations spaced at short intervals to provide for the free escape of the gases and other products of combustion. The front side of the hood is open to allow the operator to insert and withdraw irons, &c., without a preparatory manipulation of the hood, and at the same time to View his Work without interruption. The hood is preferably formed of sheet metal, its lower and front edges being turned around a strengthening wire or rod 10.
The object in providing the hood with a great number of small perforations spaced at short intervals instead of a single large opening is that by the former arrangement a sufficient outlet is provided to allow of the ready escape of the gases without permitting the escape of much heat. A large outlet opening causes an upward draft which carries off a considerable quantity of the heat, but such draft from the fire is not necessary when a forced draft from beneath is employed. Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a forge tray, the combination of a horizontal metallic plate adapted to be placed upon a masonry pedestal and provided with depending cleats or bars to engage the sides thereof, said plate being provided with a central depressed fire basin or cavity and a communicating grooved rest below the surface of the plate, and a removable hood having an open front side and provided throughout its surface with small perforations or vents, a
draft hole or opening 5 being arranged at the center or lowermost point of the fire basin or cavity, substantially as specified.
